Stopping
Proliferation Once
and For All
|
|
The nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT)
Review Conference
(RevCon) meets at
a time of a
proliferation
crisis. Despite
the grave
consequences that
can result from
this crisis,
states did not
seek to address
most of them
during this week’s
discussions on
nuclear
non-proliferation
under Main
Committee II. That
is not to say that
states were not
worried about
recent
developments
affecting Pillar
II. Aotearoa New
Zealand, Mexico,
the Philippines,
South Africa, Sri
Lanka, Uruguay,
and others
expressed concern
regarding new
modalities of
nuclear sharing or
the fact that some
non-nuclear-armed
states may be
revisiting their
commitments not to
acquire nuclear
weapons. Austria
referenced the
International
Atomic Energy
Agency (IAEA)
Director General’s
worry about the
risk of a “nuclear
proliferation
domino effect,”
warning about a
future with more
nuclear-armed
states. But the
states at the
centre of
proliferation
controversies
pointed the finger
at each other
instead of
addressing the
legitimate
concerns of the
world majority.
