Join Ann and Marjorie for an account of Deep Fission's risky, experimental plan for a small modular reactor to operate down a mile-deep borehole, now underway in the southeast corner of Kansas.
This experiment is part of the Department of Energy (DOE) Reactor Pilot Program, a federal initiative established by Executive Order 14301 to fast-track the commercial licensing and testing of so-called advanced nuclear reactor designs. It leverages DOE’s authoriza tion processes to bypass standard Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) approval during the initial testing phases and perhaps beyond.

Ann Suellentrop is a Masters-prepared Pediatric nurse, retired after a 45 year career. She is also a medical Spanish interpreter and participated in mission trips throughout Latin America, including war-torn El Salvador and Colombia.
She is Vice-Chair of PeaceWorks-Kansas City and a board member for 18 years. She is on the national board of Physicians for Social Responsibility and is a past president of the Alliance for Nuclear Accountability. She has advocated for sick workers from the highly contaminated former nuclear weapons plant at the Bannister Federal Complex in Kansas City, founded in 1949. She led opposition to the new plant opened in 2014, the KC National Security Campus.
Since January of this year she has been assisting Marjorie Reynolds, founder of Prairie Dog Alliance, in opposing Deep Fission’s plan to operate a nuclear micro-reactor down a mile-deep borehole near Parsons, Kansas.
Marjorie Reynolds is the founder and Director of Prairie Dog Alliance, a non profit group dedicated to educating and informing the public about Deep Fission's untested, experimental project at Great Plains Industrial Park, east of Parsons, Kansas. She is currently a pediatric nurse working in the Southeast Kansas area in the homes of families with children who need specialized nursing care. She joined the Air Force after she graduated high school and spent 6 years overseas serving the United States as a cryptographic maintenance technician on a traveling maintenance team. She returned to the US and joined the New Jersey Air National Guard and pursued an engineering degree. After being activated several times and meeting her future husband she decided to end her military career and focus on finishing a degree. So she moved to Southeast Kansas with her new husband and daughter and started a registered nursing program.
She has over 150 family members that will be living within a 30 mile radius of the experimental nuclear project east of Parsons and is very concerned about several aspects of the project. Early this year she formed Prairie Dog Alliance and has been working to educate the public about bringing an untested nuclear experiment to an area where the citizens will have no exclusion zone, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has been gutted by an Executive Order and over 10 states Attorney Generals have officially made comments about environmental exclusions for these projects being illegal. Her organization is committed to ensuring the public is informed and educated about how this will affect her community for years to come.
