New research: Polarising news is a trap for
reader-funded
media
- Polarising,
high-emotion
“us-vs-them”
content
increases time
spent but
lowers the
likelihood
that readers
will
subscribe,
particularly
during
politically
charged
moments like
elections.
- Even
small drops in
subscription
conversion
(5–10%) erase
the revenue
gains from
higher
engagement,
showing that
not all
engagement
contributes to
sustainable
growth.
- For
reader-funded
newsrooms,
long-term
value depends
on trust and
perceived
quality;
content that
undermines
those
foundations
ultimately
weakens the
subscription
model.
