Media Intel

The craft (and business) of TikTok storytelling, according to author Jason Pargin
  • Jason Pargin, American writer and novelist, has over half a billion views across TikTok and 1.3 million followers on all platforms yet says he sells only about 1 book per 2,000 TikTok views (or 1 per million if he doesn’t mention the book), showing just how steep the conversion funnel is for authors.
  • Despite being a New York Times bestselling author with film and TV rights sold for every book he’s written, more than half his income now comes from social media videos where a viral hit might earn $2,000, but most bring in closer to $15.
  • He warns aspiring creators there are no tricks: algorithms change constantly, TikTok’s user base is shrinking, and success demands obsessive consistency. His job is now 80–85% content creation and only 15–20% actual writing.

CBS News Ombudsman Pick Sparks Concerns Over Political Influence
  • Paramount’s appointment of Kenneth Weinstein as CBS News ombudsman raises credibility concerns, as his history of pro-Trump and conservative donations fuels skepticism about his ability to act as an independent watchdog.
  • The move reflects CBS News’ broader shift under Paramount’s new ownership, with changes to editorial practices, talks to bring in Bari Weiss, and heightened sensitivity to political criticism.
  • Paramount’s recent $16M settlement in a Trump voter interference lawsuit underscores the perception that the company is bending to political pressure, risking long-term trust in its journalistic integrity.
