Take
Away the Nuclear Button
|
|
|
When the sitting
president of a nuclear armed
nation threatens "an
entire civilization will die
tonight" or to "blow
up an entire country",
these are threats that should
not be taken lightly.
Under current US policy,
President Donald Trump possesses
the Sole
Authority to
unleash the nation's nuclear
weapons. To make matters worse,
the US policy
of First Use
authorizes the president to use
nuclear weapons not just in
retaliation, but any time the
nation's interests feel
threatened.
The framers of the Constitution
likely could not have imagined
the invention of nuclear
weapons, but they could imagine
a president declaring war
without the consent of the
nation. That is why Congress,
not the president, was
explicitly granted the sole
authority to declare war
on another nation. Today,
Congress has failed to assert
that power and end the war on
Iran. But there is another way
they are failing, because what
is the use of a nuclear weapon
but a global declaration of
war?
This is why Congressman Ted Lieu
introduced HR 669,
Restricting the First Use of
Nuclear Weapons. "This
bill prohibits using federal
funds to conduct a first-use
nuclear strike unless Congress
expressly authorizes such a
strike pursuant to a declaration
of war. A first-use nuclear
strike is an attack using
nuclear weapons against an enemy
without confirming that there
has been a nuclear strike
against the United States, its
territories, or its allies." If
you agree that we need more
nuclear safeguards for unstable
presidents, contact your elected
officials to support legislation

Testimony of Korean Atomic Bomb
Victims
|
Tomorrow there will be a special
opportunity to hear directly
from atomic bomb victims of
Korean descent, as they travel
the nation to promote an International
People's Tribunal on the 1945
atomic bombings. Between
20-30% of the victims from
Hiroshima and Nagasaki were
Koreans, forced to work under
conditions imposed by Imperial
Japan. They have never received
an apology or reparations from
the US government. Please RSVP if
you plan to attend.
The event will
be held tomorrow, April 21st,
from 1-3pm at University Friends
Meeting House, located at 4001
9th Ave SE, Seattle, WA. A light
lunch will be provided.
|
This April coalition members and
allies will be organizing
educational events including
several screenings of the film Earth's
Greatest Enemy, which
delves into the environmental
impacts of the US military.
There will also be direct
outreach events in Everett and
Mt. Vernon, a rally in downtown
Seattle, and a special visit
