Let's Demand a
Nuclear-Weapons-Free Future at
the NPT Review Conference in
NYC!
|
|
|
Next week, the
Conference of the Parties to
the Treaty on the
Non-Proliferation of Nuclear
Weapons (NPT) will convene
at the United Nations
headquarters in New York
City. The Treaty is
regarded as the cornerstone of
global nuclear
non-proliferation and an
essential foundation for the
pursuit of nuclear
disarmament. As world leaders
converge on New York City next
week, peace activists will use
this opportunity to make our
voices heard and demand a
future free from the threat of
nuclear weapons. Reaching
Critical Will has compiled a
helpful calendar
of NPT Conference side
events here, but we'd
like to particularly highlight
the below events happening
this Sunday!
The morning of Sunday, April
26th, hundreds of activists —
including Japanese and U.S.
nuclear weapons victims
(Hibakusha) — will gather in
Manhattan at the New York City
Public Library and march to
the Isaiah Wall, across from
the United Nations, to call
attention to the rising
dangers of nuclear war and to
demand that the NPT Review
Conference make progress
toward the goal of a nuclear
weapons-free world. Following
that demonstration, delegates
from the world’s nuclear
weapons movements will gather
for an afternoon conference in
Manhattan to share analyses of
the growing nuclear dangers
amidst catastrophic wars,
tectonic geopolitical changes,
and great power
confrontations. The conference
will stream on Zoom for those
who cannot attend in-person.

Protest Killer Drones
on Earth Day (Syracuse)
|
Wednesday,
April 22nd at 3:30PM
Location/Details:
Rally on Wednesday, April 22nd
at 3:30 pm at Hancock Drone
Base, 6001 East Molloy Road,
E. Syracuse, NY. Hancock
Drone Base is located just
north of Syracuse near Thruway
Exit 35. It's just over an
hour from Rochester, Ithaca or
Binghamton, and a little
further from Troy and Albany.
Carpool with your friends,
comrades, and allies for the
Earth Day Action at our local
military base here in our
backyard here in Central NY. Connect
with Upstate Drone Action
and your local organizers
here.
On Earth Day, April 22nd,
2026, let's work together to
blunt the spear-tip of U.S.
colonial aggression! Upstate
Drone Action invites YOU
to join activists from 10
universities and 8 upstate
cities at a protest at Hancock
Drone Base to push back
against "Earth’s Greatest
Enemy" in New York's own
backyard. Central New York
activists from 10
universities, 8 upstate
cities, communities, and
beyond will join this
demonstration at one of the
largest training and
maintenance drone bases in the
United States. MQ-9 Reaper
Drones piloted from Hancock
AFB have been responsible for
the assassinations of people
in Iraq, Afghanistan, and
Pakistan, while today’s
targets are cloaked in
secrecy. These killing
machines are used for military
surveillance, for delivering
Hellfire missiles and
Thermobaric GB-39 bombs, the
same weapon that evaporated
nearly 3,000 people in Gaza in
one strike. The MQ-9 Reaper
Drones at Hancock are the same
killer drones that were at the
forefront of the US invasion
of Venezuela and
assassinations on Caribbean
fishing boats, operating out
of the US drone base at Ramey
AFB, in Puerto Rico. U.S.
drones fly over Iran
continuously.

My
Deepest Desire is
a new translation of Japanese
poet Tamiki Hara’s final work
accompanied by full page ink
drawings of American artist
Sandy Walker. Hara’s writing
offers surprising articulation
of the feelings that affected
this revered writer who lived
through both the loss of his
beloved wife and the bombing
of Hiroshima. It was first
published by the Japanese
literary magazine Gunzo after
Hara’s tragic suicide in 1951.
Hara’s prose poetry and
Walker’s art make a grippingly
moving meditation on the
desire to live a different,
fuller life, free from pain,
isolation, and the intrusively
haunting experience of
tragedy. It is a demonstration
of how dreams, memories, and
traumatic despair intertwine
inside a person’s psyche. Liza
Darby’s English translation
coupled with Walker’s art is
followed by the original
Japanese text, as well as
closing calls for peace from
the president of Mayors for
Peace and the director of
Western States Legal
Foundation. All royalties from
the book will be donated to
Western States Legal
Foundation, an NGO founded in
1982 for the abolition of
nuclear weapons.
At this NYC
book launch event, artist
Sandy Walker will join Jackie
Cabasso, director of Western
States Legal Foundation, and
guest delegates from the UN’s
2026 Review Conference to the
Treaty on the
Non-Proliferation of Nuclear
Weapons.

the Date: May Day 2026
(Nationwide)
|
On May 1, 2026,
workers, students, and
families rally, march, and
take action across the
country to demand a nation
that puts workers over
billionaires. Participants
are being asked to refuse
"business as usual" by staying
home from work, school, and by
refraining from shopping.
Following the examples of the
historic 2006 "Day Without
Immigrants" that reshaped May
Day, the Black-led corporate
campaigns that have unseated
CEOs, and Minnesota’s
resistance to occupation,
together we will flex our
collective power in a
tremendous day of action —
rallying, marching, and taking
action to demand a country
that puts workers and families
over billionaires. It's up to
us to organize and act
together!
Across
the country, people are
standing up and demanding:
Tax the rich.
No ICE.
No war.
No private
army serving authoritarian
power.
Expand democracy.
Hands off our
vote.

rallies, and register to

Take
Action: Contact Congress

Tell Congress:
We need an Iran War Powers
Resolution NOW!
On February 28, 2026, the
United States and Israel
launched a coordinated
military assault on Iran
without Congressional
authorization. Since then,
Congress has failed repeatedly
to take action to rein in
Trump's reckless
warmongering.
Last week, a House War Powers
Resolution was brought up for
a vote for a third time on
Thursday, April 16.
Unfortunately, the resolution
— H.Con.Res.40, introduced by
Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-NY) with
85 cosponsors — narrowly
failed 213-214. While this
outcome was incredibly
disappointing, it is a sign
that Democratic
representatives are being
moved by public outcry against
this war: the last House War
Powers Resolution vote in
March failed by a margin of
212-219.
Meanwhile, in the Senate, a
War Powers Resolution failed
to pass for a fourth time on
Wednesday, April 15. Senate
War Powers votes have failed
largely along partisan lines:
the April 15 vote failed
47-52, with Sen. Rand Paul
(R-KY) voting with Democrats
in favor of the bill and Sen.
John Fetterman (D-Pa.)
opposing it. Going forward,
Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) has
said that he plans to push for
weekly votes as the war
continues.
To check if
your elected representatives
have supported an Iran War
Powers Resolution, click here
to use NIAC’s
Iran War Scorecard.
You
can use our form below to
send an email to your
Congressional
representatives urging them
to support War Powers
Resolutions to reassert
congressional authority over
the war on Iran, and to
oppose any supplemental
funding for this illegal
war.
