RADIATION TRAINWRECK

NRC deregulating radiation standards?

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission released to the public yesterday its draft proposed rule (PR), allowing more radiation exposure. The PR is not published in the Federal Register (FR) as of this writing (12:15 PM ET), meaning the public must prepare comments now for submission in the future. We will announce when the PR is officially published. The PR would allow greater exposures “just to save the nuclear industry money,” says Ed Lyman, Union of Concerned Scientists. For help preparing your comments please watch the Coalition to Stop Radioactive Pollution’s webinar. Join the Coalition and the Protect Better Campaign. Attend a comment writing workshop July 7. Push back against this radiation trainwreck and health onslaught.

NUCLEAR WELFARE

Funds sunk into Westinghouse (again)

The Trump administration will sink $17.5 billion of taxpayer money into the formerly bankrupt Westinghouse for 10 new full sized AP1000 reactors. The administration claimed this will, “speed the development of 10 new large nuclear reactors to meet the skyrocketing power demand from massive data centers.”

At least that confirms their intended purpose, lest we imagine it is for consumer benefit. But the idea that funding is the answer to the massive delays that rocked the Westinghouse Vogtle 3 and 4 AP1000 project in Georgia is ludicrous. The project received a total of $12 billion in federal loan guarantees and still took almost 14 years to build at 2.5 times the original cost.
