NUCLEAR
WELFARE
Funds sunk into
Westinghouse (again)
The Trump
administration will sink
$17.5 billion of
taxpayer money into the
formerly bankrupt
Westinghouse for 10 new
full sized AP1000
reactors. The
administration claimed
this will, “speed the
development of 10 new
large nuclear reactors
to meet the skyrocketing
power demand from
massive data centers.”
At least that confirms
their intended purpose,
lest we imagine it is
for consumer benefit.
But the idea that
funding is the answer to
the massive delays that
rocked the Westinghouse
Vogtle 3 and 4 AP1000
project in Georgia is
ludicrous. The project
received a total of $12
billion in federal loan
guarantees and still
took almost 14 years to
build at 2.5 times the
original cost.
