JANUARY 2026

OUR NEW YEARS RESOLUTION IS: TO HELP AS MANY NEW MEXICANS APPLY FOR AND RECEIVE $100,000+ IN RECA BENEFITS THIS YEAR!

We are proud that our film played a role in telling Congress and voters this unknown story of the aftermath of Trinity. We believe that our outreach contributed to the momentum necessary to get RECA extended to include New Mexico. Our screenings now have a whole new meaning and purpose beyond showing the film, educating and inspiring audiences. We are committed to discussing, distributing and helping people fill out their applications for RECA compensation with each in person screening.

It is urgent that we now screen extensively throughout New Mexico, since the application process closes on December 31, 2027. We need to educate as many communities as possible so that members in every New Mexico community know whether they are eligible for this significant funding!

ELIGIBILITY: Downwinders who lived anywhere in New Mexico for one year from 1944 through Nov. 1962 are eligible.

19 cancers that are covered by the expansion: Leukemia (except chronic lymphocytic Leukemia); Lymphoma (other than Hodgkins); Primary cancers of the Thyroid, Breast, Esophagus, Stomach, Pharynx, Small Intestine, Pancreas, Bile Duct, Gall Bladder, Salivary Gland, Urinary, Bladder, Brain, Colon, Ovary, Liver (unless cirrhosis/Hepatitis B present), and Lung.

COMPENSATION: $100,000 per applicant, covering the entire state of New Mexico. Family members can apply on behalf of a deceased loved one.

Coverage for uranium miners and workers is expanded:

To workers through Dec 31, 1990

To core drillers and remediation workers

To cover additional kidney disease for uranium miners

To allow for combined work histories

HELP IN APPLYING: The process of applying for RECA benefits on your own may be overwhelming. Please don’t give up. And please do not pay an attorney to assist you. Either contact the TBDC at 505-897-6787 and we’ll find a volunteer to help you. OR, your U.S. Senator or Representative's offices can help as well. Their websites and phone numbers are listed here:

Senator Ben Ray Luján Phone 505-337-7023

Senator Martin Heinrich Phone 505-346-6601

Congresswoman Melanie Stansbury Phone 505-346-7681

Congressman Gabe Vasquez Phone 505-208-4777

Who would believe that we got two requests for screenings from the same state at nearly the same time? That’s what happened after booking the Peoria screening!

The Program in Arms Control & Domestic and International Security (ACDIS) is an interdisciplinary research unit within the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (part of the Illinois Global Institute) focused on security studies. It promotes research, education, and outreach regarding international security, nuclear arms control, and policy issues, while providing resources for students. Their Office Manager emailed us and started the planning going.

ACDIS is also working with a Visiting Professor from Illinois State University, that did a series in 2024-2025 called 12,000 Bombs. He is on the IU campus this year working closely with ACDIS while on sabbatical. When he heard about the film screening opportunity he wanted to be involved as well!

So, Lois will be travelling to Illinois in February and Tina will be zooming in for these two important screenings outside of New Mexico.

The U of I Screening is at 5:00 PM on February 20th at the ILLINI UNION ROOMS 314AB.

HOW TO HOST A SCREENING IN YOUR NECK OF THE WOODS...

First We Bombed New Mexico is being shown in schools, on Native Pueblos and Reservations, to environmental and social justice groups and community organizations here in NM and across the country.

You can "Host" a screening of your own - by purchasing a single-view license to the film or finding sponsors in your area who can support a screening there. Enhance your viewing experience by having Lois Lipman and/or Tina Cordova join you and your group for an informative LIVE discussion, including Q & A, after the film (either on Zoom or in person) for an additional Speaker's Fee.

If you have members in multiple parts of a state or even in multiple states, we can tailor-make a "virtual screening event" that will be as memorable as it is enlightening for your members.

Take the First Step Watch the trailer below and contact us by replying to this email if you are interested in hosting a screening(s) or if you have any other comments or questions about this newsletter. We will contact you immediately with more information and pricing options.
