POSSIBLE QUESTIONS:
(These are questions the Protect Better team want to ask but wont be able to get to them all so if you are inclined, ask—or ask your own!! Or your variation of any of these)
- NRC says it is “updating” the regulations to reflect solid gold science as executive orders demand--.
Why don’t the new proposed rules try to prevent some of the other radiation-caused diseases in addition to cancer?
Ex: Heart disease[ like kids downwind of Chernobyl are suffering]; birth defects now and for many future generations; reduced immunity and greater chance of suffering other ailments? Neurological and urological damage?
- The rule says licensees can ignore the first 25 millirems/year of exposure to the public—WHY?? HOW??
Will it be added to the 100 millirems/year to which the licensee can already expose members of the public?
How will you measure the 25 mrem/year which you also suggest doesn’t need to be counted?
Will the public be notified and asked in advance??
Is this a new clearance or below regulatory concern level??
- Will AI be used to cull comments? IF so, which AI? What are its parameters?
- What steps must a licensee take for an exemption from the exposure limit? How will the public be notified of this request and be able to participate in the decision to increase their own exposure?? Can you tell us what method of participation the public will have and where that is documented in the proposed rule?
- How will requests for industry exemptions be administered?
Who has jurisdiction over these requests and how will they be addressed?
Will the requests for exemptions and their adjudication be made public and how will the public be included in decision making?
Will this take place before the dose happens?
- Re the new and outrageous concept of “Unused” doses for workers and the public
If the industry is asking to exceed the 100 mrem dose per year to the public, will the public be notified BEFORE the increased release(s) takes place?
And will the additional releases be allowable in the air or in the water, or both.
What public monitoring is being used and how will the public know/how will it be reported? How will the public be notified of and consulted about documented releases and any additional releases that are approved.
- How is the NRC accounting for compounding impacts on communities that have had legacy impacts of exposure from weapons testing or nuclear facilities already?
- Where/how does the NRC account for the cost of medical treatment of radiation induced illnesses? Please provide a list of what will be considered a radiation induced illness; and the criteria used to make this designation.
- What is the monetary value that you are putting on an individual human life in this calculation?
- The changes NRC is proposing would up-end five decades of standard operating procedures and the well-established compliance principle, ALARA. Due consideration requires much more than 45 days (only 34 work days) to review, research, and prepare comments. When will you be announcing the extension of time for submitting comments and for how many additional weeks will you give stakeholders?"
- How do you reconcile compliance by exemption without public knowledge with the LNT Model?
- How will different dosimetry methods reflect the current peer-reviewed science showing health impacts and how will they be evaluated for scientific accuracy. How will implementation be monitored and verified?
- What provisions protect workers from the added exposures based on the averaging and adding of exposure if under the limit - can a worker opt out without losing their job versus protecting their health?
- Appendix H is list of documents that nuclear licensees can use to calculate doses by different methods—How can we knowhow much radiation we are exposed to if there are so many “black box” calculations that can be used? How can the public review them when some cost money to even read?

Section 5 of EO 14300 directed the NRC to undertake a review and wholesale revision of its regulations and guidance documents, and issue notices of proposed rulemaking effecting this revision within 9 months [February 23, 2026] and issue final rules and guidance to conclude this revision process within 18 months [November 23, 2026]. This meeting is one of several public meetings being conducted by the NRC related to this effort.
