Media Intel:

Thursday’s Presidential Debate is different than previous years
  • The presidential debate is coming up on Thursday, and the media environment will look different than in previous years. The primary change is that there is no live audience, per the Biden team’s request that the conversation be private to avoid derailment. CNN is instead hosting the event at their Atlanta offices, with Jake Tapper and Dana Bash moderating the 90-minute conversation.
  • Other outlets will have the opportunity to livestream the event, including the New York Times, which is holding 60 of their reporters and fact-checkers on hand during the debate, Fox News, NPR, and USA Today. Traditionally, the debates are sponsored by the Commission on Presidential Debates, who would share the broadcast with any channel that wanted to air it, but this group was not invited to host given Biden’s frustrations with how they handled the conversations in 2020.

Top reporters leave Politico
  • Alex Ward, Lara Seligman, and Jack Shafer are planning to leave Politico for other outlets in the coming weeks. The three follow a wave of other Politico reporters, including Sam Stein, Burgess Everett, and Eun Kim, who have felt the need to leave the company following the editorial changes by the new leadership of the company.
  • The changes are meant to help the company adapt to an evolving news environment, including a new approach where almost every news article is read by a top editor before publication to ensure brand cohesion, a time-consuming process that some feel is changing the editorial output.
