URGE SUPPORT FOR SANDERS AMENDMENTS TO ENERGY BILL & OPPOSITION TO PRO-
NUCLEAR AMENDMENTS

The Senate Energy Committee will begin consideration of a major new
energy bill tomorrow, Wednesday, May 6, 2009.

Among other provisions, this will include creation of a proposed new
Clean Energy Deployment Administration or Clean Energy Investment Fund
that would take over and expand the Department of Energy's loan
guarantee program.

Unfortunately, as currently written, this new entity could--and likely
would--be used primarily as a vehicle for wasting tens of billions of
taxpayer dollars on new loan guarantees for construction of dangerous
and dirty new nuclear reactors.

Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont will be introducing two amendments that
would go a long ways toward ensuring that such a program will focus on
the renewable energy programs our nation needs to address the climate
crisis. The first amendment would encourage the funding of those
technologies that can produce the fastest and cheapest reductions in
carbon emissions (and that isn't nuclear power!). The second would
place a 20% cap on the percentage of funds any single technology could
receive through the program. This would tend to focus the program on
lower cost renewable and energy efficiency technologies rather than
big ticket items like new nuclear reactors or experimental coal
plants.

Please send a letter to Sen. Wyden right now and urge support of the
Sanders Amendments.

When you've written, please also call his office at 202-224-5244 and
tell him to support the Sanders Amendments.

We also expect several pro-nuclear amendments to be considered
tomorrow. These may include support for dirty reprocessing
technologies, support for the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste dump, new
subsidies for nuclear construction, and so on.

Please urge Sen. Wyden to oppose unnecessary and unwise pro-nuclear
power amendments.

Please pass this Alert on to your friends and colleagues. Please act
today: there isn't much time!

Testify in Seattle on May 21st at EPA public hearing

President Obama's Environmental Protection Agency has proposed a
historic finding that global warming pollution threatens public health
and welfare, thus ending the era of official denial which
characterized the Bush administration.

This is our first major opportunity since the Presidential Election to
demonstrate clear, decisive, overwhelming support for bold federal
action on global warming. Coal and oil companies are spending millions
of dollars to stop the EPA from moving forward. President Obama needs
our support to stand up to the corporate interests; speak out against
global warming and Rally for the Climate, Green Jobs and Clean Air on
May 21.

WHO: People supporting global warming solutions, and YOU as part of a
strong Oregon contingent! WHAT: Speak out and come to a rally on EPA's
proposed finding that global warming pollution is a threat to the
public health and welfare of the United States.

WHEN: Thursday, May 21st. Bus departs Portland at 8:00am in time for
12pm noon rally and VIP guest speakers. Hearing and testimony starts
at 9:00am and continues all day.

WHERE: Seattle’s Bell Harbor International Conference Center - 2211
Alaskan Way, Pier 66, Seattle, WA (map and directions). The noon
rally will take place at <RALLY INFO>.

TRAVEL: Get on the bus! Sierra Club is hosting a bus from Portland to
Seattle. Enjoy a free ride with breakfast, issue briefings, and good
company! Please RSVP to ride and we’ll follow up with location
details. Sign in for Portland departure 7:30am. Bus departs from
Seattle at 5:00pm

We know coal and oil companies will rally to prevent this vital first
step by President Obama's EPA. If those lobbyists are successful,
we'll lose millions of new clean energy jobs to last century's dirty
energy interests.

You can help President Obama take action on global warming by
attending the Rally for the Climate or making a public comment at the
hearing on May 21st.

Thanks for all that you do,

PUBLIC MEETING ON HANFORD’S PROPOSED TRI-PARTY AGREEMENT CHANGES AND
UPDATE ON RECOVERY ACT

May 12: Portland State Office Building, 800 NE Oregon St.

Informal Dialogue with Tri-Party Agency Managers 6:00 7:00 p.m.

Public Meeting 7:00 p.m.

The U.S. Department of Energy (USDOE), Washington State Department of
Ecology (Ecology) and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) - the
Tri-Party Agreement (TPA) agencies will hold a public meeting to
describe proposed changes to several Hanford cleanup projects. The TPA
agencies will provide an overview presentation on the proposed
changes, conduct a question and answer session, and take public
comment. In addition to the scheduled time for public comment during
the meeting, between 7:00 8:15 p.m. a court reporter will be available
in the back of the meeting room to take formal comments on the TPA
Draft Change Packages.

Among the changes being proposed are to:

Establish new and accelerated groundwater and Columbia River
protection milestones

Delay some existing milestones in retrieving buried waste and cleaning
up waste sites on the Central Plateau, and

Realign the 100 K Area cleanup work along the river.

USDOE senior managers will provide an update on the American Recovery
and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) Funding at the Hanford Site. Topics
include: how and what work was identified at Hanford to receive this
funding, current status of funded work projects, and impacts on
cleanup progress at Hanford.

USDOE, Ecology and EPA managers will be available between 6:00 and
7:00 p.m. to informally discuss the proposed TPA changes, ARRA funding
and Hanford Cleanup.
