Note that this google group is not a modorated list. Anyone who is a
member of the group can post comments to the list.

We decided that we would meet every two weeks, on thursday evening.
Next meeting is May 14 at 7 PM. Location will likely be at the First
Unitarian Church but this still needs to be confirmed.

These are notes from the first meeting of Nuclear Free Oregon group
working on nuclear issues and Oregon – specifically on how to prevent
the increased transport of nuclear waste to Hanford and to promote and
advocate for an accelerated schedule of cleanup at Hanford.

First we introduced ourselves to each other with short comments on
each of our interest in this issue.

We then had a brainstorm session of possible actions which need to be
taken:
1.educate community
2.needs to be broader than the NW
3.basic education
4.scare tactic – to use or not
5.broadsides need to be written and distributed
6.hand out flyers
7.contact city/county elected officials in large and small communities
along 1-84 and 1-5 corridors
8.we need satire component
9.general message that many can relate to.
1.Make message personal, from Portlanders and Portlanders.
10.connect to larger nuclear movement
11.ID corporate actors – they make the waste and make money, and then
get more money to “clean” it up,frequently the same corporation
(Westinghouse, Areva and Bethel)
12.need to combine message of what we are against and what we are for
(Protect family, Protect Health)
13.danger to water supply
14.need a message committee to develop various ways of commicating,
basic 101 and more complex
15.need to get people to comment on DOE plans and to get people to
meetings (
16.need to promote resolutions by cities opposed to use of Hanford to
storage of wastes; need a committee to write and present
17.need committee to visit and present to city/county councils
18.need to contact college students to generate support and awareness

List of (possible) allies:
Alliance for Democracy, Women's International League for Peace and
Freedom, Sierra Club, Heart of America NW (Gerry Pollet was at
meeting), Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility, Columbia
Riverkeeper, Hanford Watch, Osprig, Hanford Challenge, peace groups.

In terms of allies, we are trying to slow or eliminate nuclear weapons
be removing disposal sites, thereby preventing the manufacture of
nuclear weapons while non-proliferation movement attempts limit their
production.

General notes:
1.Hanford being pushed a s “re-processing” site because they want to
continue making more bombs. Hanford is the location when that waste
will be dumped. Produced at Los Alamos, Oakridge, Savannah River,
Laurence Livermore, Nevada test site.
2.Message can be that we should be scared locally but that it is not
ok to move it to someone else's backyard.

Meeting we need to attend:
1.TPA public Meeting on May 12, (Tuesday), 7 pm at the Oregon State
Office Building in Portland. 800 NE Oregon, Rm 1A. TPA – Tri-party
Agreement.
2.New US DOE Environmental Statement release date expected May 15,
09. This is for using Hanford as national waste dump and what to do w/
existing wate on site. Hearing to be held in Sept in Portland and
Hood River.
