The world reels, stunned by the misfortune of the Japanese in their
ongoing natural and manmade disasters. In all the news reports
however I have yet to hear about releases of radioiodine, although
they are talking about detecting radiocesium. Both iodine and cesium
are biologically available elements that you don't want to inhale or
ingest but iodine generally escapes nuclear plant confinement as a gas
whereas cesium is more likely to be in the form of some kind of solid
corrosion product. So for cesium to be detected almost certainly
means there's much more radioactivity being released in the form of
radioiodine, blowing away in the wind. Is it just being missed by the
detection equipment, or is this another case exactly like every
previous nuclear accident where alarming information is withheld from
the public in the early stages? If anyone hears ANYTHING on the news
about radioactive iodine coming from the Japanese reactors, will you
please tell the group about it?
