Hi everyone,

This week, Alex Betts will be speaking in the number theory seminar on Quadratic Chabauty and a conjecture of Stoll (abstract below). As usual, the seminar is at 11am in PDL C-401 and we will go to lunch with the speaker after the talk.

Abstract: When you want to solve a Diophantine equation in practice, one of the most powerful modern techniques is the Chabauty—Kim method, which proceeds by constructing p-adic functions vanishing on the rational solutions of your equation. In this talk, I will discuss a heuristic which predicts when these functions cut out exactly the set of rational points. As we will see, the naive version of the heuristic is not quite correct, since there can occasionally be extra "unexpected" algebraic irrational points where the functions vanish (in accordance with a conjecture of Stoll). I will outline what is known about these unexpected points, including some ongoing work with Jennifer Balakrishnan.

Hi everyone,

Sadly Alex's first flight was delayed and there was no way for him to get a connection to get to Seattle in time for the talk tomorrow. He has graciously agreed to give a seminar over Zoom in a shorter form to leave more time for questions. I will set up my computer to broadcast the seminar in the seminar room, but the sound may not be very good, so if you're worried about that, you're welcome to join the Zoom call from your own device.

See you tomorrow!

Bianca Viray is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.
