Here are my proposals for the PPT and presentation.

I think the info is sufficient, but how to present in FUN and
INTERESTING way may be a challenge.

I wonder whether we can present a mind map of PPT first, divided into
two:
C.V. of president and How to make a SG president.

1. C.V. of president:
Write a C.V.: including personal info, education background, working
experience, honors and publications, habbits and interests. (I got a
feeling that all slides are talking about prsident's C.V.)

2. How to make a SG president
(This part is to go through the details of C.V. in FUN and INTERESTING
way.)

For example, should we present as below in term of name and education?

First, to become a president, you should have a …(special, great, …)
name, and then explain the name of president Sellapan Rama Sellapan
Ramanathan, after that show some presidents’s name which are
interesting.

Second, to become a president, you should drop out of school.
Introduce to his education backgound, and then, mention the education
experience of Bill gates and Steve Jobs ( President of com).

Let’s discuss more if it is acceptable.

I remember an opening speech of HK MC as follows, what do you think
about it?

A: What’s your childhood dream?
B: Well, my childhood dream has not come true. My childhood dream is
to become a famous person, like the president. And what about yours?
A: Well, my childhood dream has not come true neither.
B: Really? What’s your childhood dream?
A: My childhood dream is to become an ordinary person.
……

I am wondering whether we can use it following this:

For the last yrs, I have been thinking about why my dream did not come
true. I found the reasons when I was preparing this presentation. Ok,
let us present you what I have found.

I think Prof. Kan’s good news and bad news is fun, can we apply to the
presentation warming-up and closing?

Cheers,

Dear all,

I'm following up on Lihui's post on presentation style.

I would agree that our information is sufficient and that we can now
concern ourselves with the delivery of a lively presentation.

I like the suggestion on framing the information using a two-parter
approach: 1) CV of president and 2) How to make a SG President, with a
focus on the latter (since the former will read like a list of
accomplishment etc.).

What say you guys?

Lihui, since you're the one who came up with this idea, along with a
brief opening dialogue, are you keen to represent our team to give the
presentation? I can assist in jazzing up the slides aesthetically to
enhance and support your presentation format.

Just a thought. :)

Cheers,
Erika

Hi! I hope everyone's enjoying, as much as we possibly can : ), the
start of recess week. 'am replying to previous posts by Jeff, Jorge,
Walter, Aileen & Erika.

On the PPT: I can also help polish the slides. At 38 slides, the
presenters need to manage the time well and/or we can reduce the no.
of slides (perhaps have an annex and transfer some info to that
section).

On the no. of presenters: ' agree that 2 is the optimal number given
the time allotment and the plan to show the video.

On the presentation suggestions:
- ' agree that it should be fun & interesting, it can be in 2 parts
(to make the info easier to remember & to "digest"), and it can take
the form of Prof. Kan's good & bad news. AILEEN, do you have have any
specific suggestions in mind for the good news-bad news?

- "Second, to become a president, you should drop out of school." In
my opinion, while this is a "fun" statement, we might be opening
ourselves to unnecessary questions if we mention this conclusion.
While some great people today did not finish school, there will be
others who graduated and became successful as well. : )

Thanks!

>>> Agreeable to this too. Although I believe that Aileen meant for this to be taken as lighthearted banter rather than a serious statement and conclusion. Regardless, I agree that it may lead to misinterpretation or to questions that will hijack and skew our main presentation.

Hmmm, 4 - 5 more days to go...!

Thanks!

Dear all

Aileen has pointed out a good suggestion, but we are now presenting
the info about SIngapore's President. Should we focus on how he
dedicate himself into social welfare and activities and approachable
he is?

Although I am also not sure whether the below is ideal or not, I feel
that we should say good things about S.R.Nathan when we are presenting
in the professional seminar in NTU. So all our foreign students can
realize that Singapore president is hard-working, brave, dedicated,
friendly, approachable president.

Since we have decided to present in 2 parts, I suggest as below

Part 1 is to tell 2 stories about SR Nathan:
(1) first story will be known from his book 'why am I here'
-----------
The young Nathan has been depressed when he was a seamen welfare
officer, and he made plans for his departure from the civil service.
But he changed his mind when Father Fox asked: 'Have you ever asked
yourself why you are here?’ Because of that little speech from Father
Fox, many a time in the course of his long career, Mr Nathan would ask
himself: 'Why am I here?' The question meant so much to him that he
chose it for the title of his book.

From that, we can learn that President Nathan really delicates himself
into serving Singapore civilian, and always doing his best as
possible.

(2) Second story is about Laju hijacking by Japanese Red Army.
When SR Nathan was director of security and intelligence at the
Ministry of Defense, he and the other 13 Singaporean guarantors
volunteered to become hostage in exchange of the release of 5 crew
members.

From that, we can see how brave SR Nathan is from this Laju Hijacking
incident.

**After these 2 stories, can play a video about the portrait in
Science center....................

Part 2 is to tell people how president Nathan keeps contributing to
Singapore society and some thing about his personal life,
E.g. he is learning Chinese and know how to write Chinese calligraphy;
how he create president's challenge to help people. After that, we can
present how he involves himself in sport, art and entertainment.

**After that, play a video about Singapore 45th National day.

** The last is to show the photo of Happy 45th Birthday Singapore !

Thanks
Regards

Mony and Jeff,

Erika is right, I meant to be taken as lighthearted banter rather than
a serious statement and conclusion. I did not mean to talk sth
negative about president.
In terms of education, may be we can conclude that self-learning is
important or sth like that.
family: family is a small country, to manage your family well
career: i think the yr and the title is not important, we can
summarize what industries the president had feet on,
office: can dele?
honors: select one related to KM, for exam, MOD
books: many presidents are good at writing, to become a writor is
their childhood dreams
challenge: related to KM,,,Lessons learned.
hobby and interests: balance life and work...

My proposal is for reference only, I belive the presentors' proposals
and presenting styple are more important.

cheers,

aileen

Thanks Erika, Aileen & Jeff!

Erika - Let me see what I can do tonight with the slides. I will edit
it based on Jeff's latest suggestion (if everyone agrees) and email it
to the team. I will also try if I can post the edited slides here in
Google (I was not successful the 1st time).

Posting here a copy of the email I sent via my Yahoo mail. Pls SMS me
if you haven't received/gotten a copy of the slides by tomorrow.

===================================================

Hi All! Attached is the edited presentation. I've uploaded this in
Google Docs, but I'm sending this via email as well, just to make sure
that everyone gets a copy.

Edits done include:
> Added a slide for Internet sources - Prof Kan's instruction, see slide 27 of Ppt handout during the 1st Prof Sem
> Slide 3 - Number of grandchildren is 3 based on Istana & Wikipedia; I can't find the names of his 3 grandkids online
> Slide 9 - Based on my internet search he did not write 4 books (as originally stated). He just wrote 1 (Why am I here?). The others he wrote are a lecture on foreign policy, a report on the voyage, and a foreword of a book. All these info can be found in the NLB site.
> Lessening text per slide and adding some animation

For additional information, refer to the notes section. Most slides
contains notes.

Please feel free to revise slides as appropriate.
