OK, maybe more than a mere annoyance.

Our email is configured so that an external sites gathers the email and then pass it along to us. That external site has been down for almost a full business day, and the owner has not responded to requests for assistance. So, I'm looking for somebody to receive email for our domain, so that server would connect to it and then bring it into our local Exchange server. Any suggestions?

Yes, I know, it's irritating.

Thanks in advance,
-Adam

Like a Backup MX service, or are you looking for something with mailboxes and virus/spam scanning?

I’m guessing you’re doing this for filtering. We use Mimecast for that and have been extremely happy with them.

Do you have a commercial spam/AV service? If you do, they should
perform mailbagging for you.

Alternatively, you could get an appliance on-premises that does the
scanning for you - we use a Barracuda appliance, and it works fairly
well.

+1 for Mimecast – we use it for several of our clients and have had an excellent experience so far. Continuity mode has saved the bacon on more than one occasion.

We used to use Barracuda, now we use ProofPoint on-premises.

We'll probably stick with Barracuda on-prem until we go full on to
O365, then switch to ProofPoint. Don't know when that would be...

Indeed, it might fit the bill. Unfortunately, as you might guess from the presence of Exchange 2003 running on Windows Server 2003, my boss isn't exactly eager to spend money.

https://exchangedefender.com/ would be another.  And they deal with small businesses.  (Notoriously cheap so you are in good company)

RE: cheap...

Before we had a Barracuda appliance, I put this in place:

It ran on FreeBSD (and on Linux, but I never tried that, because I'm a bigot that way), and was very light. In addition to FreeBSD, I used Postfix and PostgreSQL.

If you've got a spare machine (or room on your VM hosts), it might be a reasonable alternative for on-prem spam/antivirus filtering. Then update your MX records, and you shouldn't need a mailbagging service.

You might also try mailstore.com.  While I’ve not yet used it it’s been close.  I believe they have a cloud type option and you can retrieve your mail from there if your regular exchange server is offline.  I obviously don’t know all the particulars.

Also before Barracuda was knocking on my door, we were using Untangle that has built in spam/AV/web/firewall and we’ve never looked back.  But Untangle doesn’t store email….it quarantines it….the bad stuff that is.

We’re currently using AppRiver for spam filtering and queueing. It’s pretty good for around $12 per mailbox per year.

In addition to +1 for Proofpoint and Mimecast, you can also go with SpamHero for those wallet-nervous types.   I used it for my home network for almost two years before going with Proofpoint (for more features).

Boxbe looks like an interesting service.  It's like a really nice GUI slapped onto what I used to accomplish with ASSP's sender identification-related settings.  Mainly in terms of white, black, and greylisting senders.

I used Axway Mailgate (on-site) in addition to Mimecast (hosted). I liked both services but if cost is an issue then Mailgate might be cheaper and they have excellent support. It's a virtual appliance and you can even purchase the high-availability module to run dual appliances in case one fails or you have to take it offline for maintenance.
