Has anyone built a Remote Desktop Services Server?

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/remote/remote-desktop-services/rds-supported-config

I find the instructions I have found here and there to be very wanting. If anyone has a good site to reference then that would be appreciated. 😊

Many thanks in advance for your time.

Regards,

Laszlo

It depends on how things are being set up.

VM0: Broker/Gateway/Web

VM1+: Session Host

VM-Other: User Profile Disks or FSLogix disks host

We set up VM0 with the three roles, configure them,  create the Collection, add the Session Host, and things pretty much proceed from there. FSLogix is included with RDS CALs/SALs with benefits over User Profile Disks though there are issues with the current Teams v1/v2 setup at the moment that I’m not sure have been fixed yet.

The out of the box experience can be managed post deployment using Server Manager on the Broker. Set up your certificate(s) there, your RD Gateway URL, and groups.

Are you going to need single sign-on and RSS feeds for RemoteApps? That requires a number of steps at the Active Directory and Group Policy levels.

Depending on your security model and number of connections, you can also split the broker role on a separate VM from the gateway/web.

As for the session hosts, try to group the published apps for the group of users that will need access to them if you have the capacity to do so. You can also not use the gateway/web if you have a load balancer like F5.

Hello,

In my opinion 15 users is too much nowadays for 1 session host.
I would use at least 2 sessions hosts for 15 users.
I would use at least 32GB RAM per session host if you plan to use Office suite software and webbrowsers.

Use FSLogix User Profile Containers (don't use Office containers), finetune the GPO for Fslogix.
Put your admin users in the FSLogix exclusion group, so you can troubleshoot when needed and not be locked out!

Finetune the webbrowser with GPO, you can limit resources, set roaming profile etc.

You'll get a good working/stable RDS farm if you finetune/lockdown to make sure users can't do much wrong.

Regards,
Stan
