I'm retiring. I've put in my notice, and my last day at $Job is December 31st, and I've put in for social security. 

38+ years doing this is enough.

I will remain on this list for at least a while, if for no other reason than to harass ErikG, MBS, Micheal and a few others - you know who you are.

For anyone who wants to submit a resume for either a sysadmin position or an IT security position, probably needing to relocate to Great Falls, MT, or maybe Spokane, WA ping me off list. Both of these positions are open at the moment.

I have a laundry list of projects unfinished and recommendations they've ignored that I'll be compiling for them - I expect it will prove to be an interesting 1 /12 months.

I don't remember when I joined, but it's been a very long time.

I was on a couple of other lists as well, which have long since disappeared. I think one of them was called WinNT-L, or something like that, and there was at least one more.

I don't remember my emails address(es) from back then either, so it makes it tough to STFW.

That’s an impressive feat in a day and age where folks are looking to jump ship after 2-3 years and 5 years is going long.

 

I admire the tenacity give the reality that much of that time would have been knuckle grinding and mundane. 😉

Perhaps I should clarify.

I started work at a retail company in 1984 in their credit department, was as lucky enough in 1987 to be hired to their mainframe helpdesk (I consider that to be the start of my IT career), and left that company in 1995.

I went to a contract position at another company, then after 6 months jumped to a contract at Microsoft. I left that contract after 6 months because it wasn't real IT work - I was part of their marketing department, and attended Comdex and wrote newsletters and worked with user groups (remember those?) 

I landed with an insurance company for about 2 years, then spent the next few years working through a number of startups, all of which imploded in short order - it was the dotbomb era, for sure

I finally landed at a electronics systems company in 2001, and lasted there until 2019. Since then I've been at my current company.

So, two rather long stints, interspersed with a few much shorter ones - I've spent just over 6 years at my current position.

As for post-retirement plans, I hope to be spending time with my two teenage boys, read the stacks and mounds of books I've been accumulating, and perhaps play some chess and bridge. I might even spend a few minutes a day on the rowing machine I bought a few years ago.
