I'll grab my bag of popcorn and my Mexican coke, and sit back and enjoy.

Should prove very entertaining.

Assuredly.

They also have to worry about AI ‘hallucinating’ the correct solution to the issue and making it 10 times worse.

Hence the popcorn and soft drink.

If I were actually involved, I'd probably break out the bourbon instead.

I feel like "hallucinating" is an accepted term now, so we shouldn't need quotes around it anymore. Maybe that's just me though.

I think it needs quotes. Hallucinations require imagination. AI lies when it doesn't know an answer.

Except that a lie requires knowing you are not being factual. IMHO, one problem with AI is that it does not doubt. (Religious fanatics have the same problem.) It makes claims that it believes are true, so they are not lies.

I'm also not sure hallucinations require imagination. They are more like dreams while awake, and there is plenty of evidence that many animals dream. I'd bet there is evidence that animals can hallucinate too (e.g. rabies mania), but only a few animals would be considered to have an imagination.

Ultimately, there is no perfect word for what AI does, but assigning a word to an unknown thing and deriving meaning out of consensus is how language evolves.

For now, I vote for "hallucination" until someone comes up with a better word.

Erich

I love it!

We were told in the 1970s, or maybe it was the 1980s, that computers would ease life such that the everyday human would only need to work 4 days a week or even less.

We ended up needing to feed the machines so we’re working harder and longer hours to do so.

Now, the machines are going to feed themselves?

<Insert Pirate Laugh Here>

That’s a hoot!

Especially since the hallucinogenic properties of AI should lead to some very “interesting” outcomes. 😃

While at the Home & Garden show for the north central Alberta region I encountered a local distillery that had a bottle of vodka so I bought one figuring I’d try it even though it is grain and I prefer potato.

It’s DELICIOUS! And, it isn’t lasting long as I really enjoy the sips.

I’d be picking up a couple of bottles, a case of those triangular nacho chips, a big batch of home made salsa, and a wheel of creamy Havarti for my sit-down and watch. :D

Someone at $dayjob tried using Copilot a few weeks ago to troubleshoot an issue. It gave semi-relevant advice but seemed confused as to the actual issue being worked on. It also suggested running some Get- PowerShell commands that don’t exist.

After this person tried screwing around with them for 30 minutes or so they asked for help. I went right to the actual learn.microsoft.com documentation, told them those commands don’t exist and these are the actual ones, and stop believing Copilot.

I recently had a go ‘round with Microsoft 365 support where the tech was very obviously using Copilot to generate steps for me to do.

Based on the screenshot you shared, it seems the guest user is facing some access and authentication issues. Here are a few potential reasons and solutions:

  1. Guest User Permissions: Ensure the guest user has the appropriate permissions to access the files. Team owners or admins can manage guest user permissions in Teams and SharePoint.
  2. ……

I called them on it, observed that AI is not great at interpreting context and was repeating things they’d already asked me to do, and asked if they had any other ideas. Copilot just isn’t there yet.

"Hallucinate" and "lie" are things that humans
do. AI is not human. It is software that is owned
and (should be) controlled by humans. Those
humans should accept complete responsibility for
everything this software does.

What AI does is have bugs--sometimes very very big and bad bugs.

Let's stop anthropomorphizing this and tell it like it is.

Well... this is how well Copilot works at coding (Github for .NET, official from MS)

https://github.com/dotnet/runtime/pull/115762

TL;DR: Copilot coding and other developers kept correcting all kind of stupid things again and again and again.

We can see that it is very effective in saving developer time. /s

That's my experience with Copilot + PowerShell.

Little subtle things are difficult to spot, like "Create a PowerShell function to list all users in Active directory who didn't change their password during the last 90 days" and the proposed code looked for expired passwords instead of validating the 90 days.

In the GitHub example above (there are more in Reddit), a lot of things were done wrong. Copilot was hardcoding existing iOS/MacOS versions or things like "if OS version <15 then MacOS else iOS" instead of using the correct methods. If you have no idea what's going on, the code tests fine... until it stops working when MacOS 15 comes to market.

The marketing's business case is that you can save money firing your engineers and replacing them with AI experts and some monkeys (pay peanuts...).

In fact, this is the classical "bullshitter gets promoted" thing. Nice speech capabilities help a lot for career advances. Let's use LLMs for their second L = Language tasks and keep the bullshitting out of the decisions.
