I didn’t know that _two_ browsers could be set as _default_ at the same time….
GDI32.dll is a Graphics Device Interface dll.
Perhaps try updating the video driver.
Would it happen to be an integrated Intel video subsystem? (dumb question: on a Lenovo it’s highly likely)
If so, the Intel Driver Update tool might pull down a more compatible driver than the Lenovo tool:
https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download/18002/intel-driver-support-assistant.html
It’s saved my bacon a couple times when Dell was slow to update their drivers….

Thank you for the suggestion. I will try that. To clarify, I’m not setting two browsers as the default at the same time. I set it to Chrome and test. Once it crashes, I reboot, set it to Edge and test again. I guess I should have stated, “It happens when Edge or Chrome are set as the default browser”.

Sorry Ashley. My comment was a little snarky but then, I’ve been up since 3am! Yikes!!!
I know two browsers can’t be set as default at same time… figured it was an OR condition and not an AND condition.
Hopefully the Intel tool will help resolve.

No worries!
I ran the Intel tool and it installed an updated graphics driver, but the issue still persists.
Thanks,

Thank you for the suggestion. I turned it off for both browsers, but the issue persists.
We do and that’s the first thing I tried. I uninstalled the application and rebooted to test. Sadly it still crashes the browsers.
It appears to be more than Outlook. I can open each browser once. If I close them and try to open them again, nothing happens. I check the event logs and I see the GDI32.dll errors until I reboot the system.
I’ve tried uninstalling the browsers and reinstalling but that didn’t resolve it either.
Thanks again for the suggestions.

Well, I searched and found this. It’s quick so worth a try:
Go to Google Chrome settings / advanced settings / system
Check "Continue running background apps..."

You mention Chrome and Edge Ashley…
Have you tried Firefox, Opera or Vivaldi?
Other random thoughts:
To see if it’s a GDI object leak, add GDI Objects to the Details tab of Task Manager. Some postings indicate that 10,000 GDI objects for all the Chrome processes means a crash is looming.
I have Chrome open right now with 3 tabs: Task Manager shows 14 Chrome processes, all but 2 showing 0 GDI objects; total for the remaining 2 processes is 22 GDI objects…
Try watching the GDI Object count before and after clicking a link…
How were these laptops imaged? i.e. are they running the factory install of Windows or an image you’ve applied?
Can you take one out of service long enough to install Windows from scratch (don’t use an old image), patch and update, install Office, patch and update, install Chrome, patch and update and – whew – try again?

Thanks again for the additional suggestions. I tried Firefox and it works just fine.
As far as GDI objects, if I have Chrome open with one tab, I see 23 GDI objects. When I click on the link in the email, I can see Chrome pop up in the task manager with 4 instances and 7 GDI objects, but it goes away as soon as it crashes.
The laptops were imaged with a WIM with the latest updates. I have thought about using an out of the box install to see what the results are, but I am trying to hold off until I hear back from MS support. Supposedly, I will hear something from them on Monday. If not, I will go the out of the box route and let you know how it goes.
Thanks,

The other mention earlier today of 3rd-party anti-virus sitting in the middle and responding to link click events in the email might also be the culprit Ashley.
Have you tried disabling your AV if you are using a 3rd-party AV product?

I just wanted to let you all know that we finally got to the bottom of the issue. It was an application that we use called IA Print Manager. Apparently, it is a known issue with the implementation of CET in 11th Gen Intel and Zen 3 AMD processors, coupled with updates to Windows and Chrome/Chromium Edge have created a problem where these browsers crash immediately upon launching the application or starting a print job when they are hooked by Print Manager.
The vendor doesn’t have a permanent fix yet, but did provide us with some workarounds.
Thank you Gordon and everyone else that chimed in with suggestions.
