Is containers the future?

In my research for VMWare replacement, I’ve stumbled into the Kubernetes world.  The vendor I’m talking to, obviously trying to get me to get onboard with them, is saying that Kubernetes, and containers in general, is the future. In all your widespread experiences, is this the truth?  Or just another sales pitch?

They have their place. But are they going to replace everything? Heck no.

 

The original intent was like a sandbox – an isolated place to run a task that contains EVERYTHING the task needs – OS, libraries, runtimes, app – all together. Then, theoretically, you test everything as a package and the world is swell.

 

They are lower overhead than traditional VMs. Much higher overhead than a typical OS. They scale easily.

 

But building them and maintaining them can be challenging.

Containers are more prevalent in development shops. They have a long way to go in most business environments to replace traditional systems and applications. Also, maintaining and updating containers is a whole different story. Check with your application vendors on container support before going down the container rabbit hole.
