I tried to get my company to implement tape (LTO) when the opportunity arose, but it was too old fashioned for them. You'd think a medium sized retailer would like to save money, which tape does, and store the tapes in their remote location (a distribution center a few miles away in a safe), rather than pay for cloud storage. Restore times would be faster too.

If people are not following the 3-2-1-1-0 rule (3-2-1 Backup Rule Explained: Do I Need One?) then they are asking for trouble. I'm going a step further and having both copies (on-prem and cloud) be immutable. The on-prem copy will allow for fast recovery without having to pull down backups from the cloud while the cloud version is in case the entire local datacenter is gone and I need to restore my systems in the cloud.

I put the fear of Jesus into anyone that is looking to go all-in with anything public cloud.

 

The main thing is: Do they back it up? Is the backup verifiable or are they fudging.

 

See the recent N-Able FusterCluck, among others of which I have a long memory and list for, to push the point home.

 

Example: There is _no_ backup for D365 Business Central. It’s all reliant upon Microsoft. If the system goes belly up somehow the business could be done. It’s nuts. Geo-redundancy the cloud pusher says. Owner pushes back, “well, it’s 90% foolproof” was the response.
