Anyone have any advanced troubleshooting tips.

Outlook 2019 on my main workstation became really sluggish last week and finally crashed.  Would not re-open after a computer restart.

I deleted my profile, but when opening outlook and it prompts to create a new one, but never finishes, always fails with “something went wrong and Outlook couldn’t setup your account”.

I’ve tried creating profiles with different names, no go.

Tried outlook on a different computer, same network and it works fine.

Ran the suggested setup and recovery assistant for Office 365 and it passes all tests.

Uninstalled office 2019 and installed Office 2021 LTSC, same error.

Just hoping I can fix this so I don’t have to reload the machine.

Any advice appreciated.

Glen.

This sounds like a problem I’ve seen before.  The fix will sound very similar to what you’ve already done but it’s pretty quick to do, so you might try it.

First, restart the PC.  Then sign on and run a full repair on office.  When that’s done, try to start Outlook.

I found it was important to restart first.  Otherwise, the repair failed.

Could it be these? there are two separate issues affecting Microsoft email services reported this weekend. The first issue, ID #MO416276 reported Saturday, 8/20, is preventing some accounts from loading and displaying all emails. The second, ID #MO414814 reported today, 8/21, is preventing Office 365 desktop apps from opening or authenticating with Office profiles, including Outlook.

Don’t think so, my problem started on Thursday or maybe Wednesday of last week and as I said, my other computer has no problems connecting to the same accout.

Thanks, but that didn’t help.  Ran the full online repair.  Tried creating a new never before named profile.  No dice.

Something that outlook uses is broke since the recovery assistant test passed.  Anyone know if it is possible to remove and re-add the bit in windows of the mail applet in control panel.

I may try nuking my profile on this machine and creating a new one, but dang I hate going through all that customization, again.

I'd run "sfc /scannow" followed by two "DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth"

That should verify that everything currently installed has the right checksums and such.

Thanks.

Akshually, before doing that, why not try with a new local account on the same computer and see if that profile can connect…

Thanks.

Ok, must be something wonky in my profile.  New local windows account, outlook created profile as expected.

So reckon what part of the registry or cached content in my profile is hosed?

Shot in the dark. Try turning off "offline mode". So it doesn't write to the ost file. If it then opens, you can create a new ost file and turn offline mode back on.

Since Outlook wont start, I resorted to a reg change, from here, https://mikecrowley.us/2018/07/05/start-outlook-in-offline-mode-without-opening-it-first/

but that made no difference.

Who knows if that reg entry is valid for Office 2021?

Has to be the mapi subsystem, but I don’t know of any way to “clean it up”.

Try the scannow and dism. That’s all I got.

Every time I've seen this behavior on any version of Office, chkdsk has shown drive errors. This is, IMHO, why using a new profile works: it's just putting the data in a part of the drive that isn't defective (yet).
chkdsk c: /f /r /x

Ran it, on next reboot, let it reboot  got to 100 %. Left it there saying repairing, with dots spinning for about 20 hours.  This mooring still at same so I powered it off and back on.  No change in outlook.

I think it’s time to nuke my profile and start over, unless there are any other suggestions.

Not sure if this was suggested yet.  Did you try pointing the local OST file somewhere outside your user profile like c:\outlook?   Setup a new outlook profile and you can specify it.  I also think there are probably drive errors and this could get around them.

New profile and outlook connected to Office 365 as expected.

Thanks to all that offered suggestions.

Well, since I couldn’t even open outlook and the account never got setup, not sure how I would have changed the OST locations, but moot point now as I nuked and re-created my windows user profile and outlook is working as expected.
