Hello everyone,

I am looking for a few volunteers to help moderate the "NT List" Google Groups. The public discussion groups currently are:

There is also a ntadmin...@googlegroups.com group that is reserved as a moderator-only backchannel.

The main need is help reviewing pending messages, keeping obvious spam off the lists, and making sure legitimate posts do not stay stuck waiting for approval. This does not require a large time commitment, but it does require someone who checks in regularly and can apply reasonable judgment.

In practice, moderation is very light. Google already catches and completely blocks most obvious spam, and it can be months between items appearing in a moderation queue. When something does get held, it is often just a misconfigured mail sender looking suspicious rather than an actual problem message. You do not have to manually monitor the queues, since Google Groups will send a notification when something requires moderator review.

This is by far the most hands-off thing that I moderate, but it should have more than one moderator for redundancy, coverage, and succession planning.

Ideal volunteers should be:

  • Familiar with the purpose and tone of the NT List groups
  • Comfortable identifying spam, promotional posts, and off-topic messages
  • Willing to help keep the lists useful and professional
  • Able to moderate fairly and without unnecessary intervention

If you are interested in helping or otherwise gaining experience in how to moderate a group, please reply privately.

Thank you,

-Micheal
