Can't connect from Linux properly

Hi,

I am using RedHat 7.3 and a Terayon Terajet via a USB port with NTL.

I can't connect to the 'net properly:

1)ftp hangs when I do 'ls' or 'get' - it gives a message about
'passive mode' and then stops

2)I can't browse any websites except bbc.co.uk,ft.com and
thetimes.co.uk (and perhaps some others I don't know about). The
browser gets really slow, and doesn't load the pages. Sometimes if I
try another web page after trying a first one which doesn't work, then
the first one will half come up, but basically it doesn't work well.
However, bbc.co.uk and ft.com will work reliably.

Please help. I don't think it's a DNS problem or a routing problem.
I have discussed this problem on comp.os.linux.networking, and I have
provided output from various programs (lsmod, ifconfig, etc) there.

I don't think it's a browser problem, 'cos I tried links and netscape
as well as mozilla and pretty much the same thing happened.
Everything works fine under Windows ME, so I don't think it's a
connection problem.
