SMC Barricade Setup nightmare.

I've just purchased an SMC Barricade 7004BR Router and am having some
teething problems with the setup thereof and would be grateful if
anyone could let me know what I'm doing wrong. Anyway, I unplugged
the CM from my NIC and plugged its cable into the WAN port on the
router. Is the (crossover?) cable i got with my Terayon Terajet modem
interchangeable with the one that comes with this router, by the way?
I then plugged the cable from my secondary NIC (for my internal LAN)
into one of the numbered ports on the router and did the same for my
other machine. I set the TCP/IP properties on both machines to obtain
an IP address automatically, made sure there were no gateways listed
and selected disable DNS, etc. etc.
I then checked winipcfg (did the release and renew stuff) and noted
that the IP address assigned to the first machine was 192.168.123.123
with a default gateway of 192.168.123.254. Incidentally the Realtek
RTL8139 Nic is listed here (in winipcfg) as NDIS 5.0 driver - this was
how it came up when I just attached to my ISP straight from the CM too
I think but I never had any problems whatsoever.
Now, the first indication that the SMC's installation wasn't going too
well was when I rebooted for the first time and received an error
message saying:

"The following error occured while loading protocol number 0: The
computer name you specified is already in use on the network...".
This was not the case and, after changing the NetBios name of this PC
and rebooting once more it still happened. It still does albeit
intermittently (Could this have anything to do with the presence of
Hosts files on the machines - I used static Ips so I could host some
test sites on a IIS installation on NT server 4 - can I not do the
static IP thing anymore?)
Nevertheless, I then went to machine number 2 and did the same
alteration of the TCP/IP properties. Winipcfg reported that my IP
address here was 192.168.123.184 and the gateway (happily enough) was
the same as that listed on the first machine (192.168.123.254).
Trying to browse Network Neighbourhood on either machine at best
showed up both machines but only let me actually click on the one I
was actually sitting at to get any results. The most common result
was a "\\ PCName is inaccesible" error message. I have just however,
accessed the machine which originally had the CM attached to it from
my other machine and everything's worked OK. As I type i've just done
it in the other direction and that's OK too now.
It must be noted, owever, that the m1 light on the router has always
been amber whereas the others (Ports and WAN) are all nice n green.
So, where was I? Oh yeah..the plot thickens, I did the
http://192.168.123.254 bit via my web browser logged in, clicked
Primary Setup, did as the manual suggested and got the following
results:

System Status

Item WAN Status Sidenote
Remaining Lease Time 00:00:00............Reconfiguring...
I P Address 0.0.0.0
Subnet Mask 0.0.0.0

What gives here?

I thought the barricade was a cinch to set up but then again, it just
ain't my lucky day is it? And that ain't the worst of it, because i
was just too impatient to wait for the above to come if I ordered it
from dabs I rushed off to PCWorld like the sap that I am and ended up
paying £139 for the thing. Sheesh, and I've yet to attempt setting it
up under W2K pro and SuSE linux 7.0 on machine 1 and Red Hat Linux 7
on machine two. Furthermore, my installation CD doesn't contain the
print server software's install.exe - like I said it's not my lucky
day.
So, come on people, give a boy a break whydontcha?
What's the problem with this set up and how can i resolve it
Thanks in advance for any advice you may have to offer.

Cheers Dudes.

The computer name error mesage is (According to Microsoft's knowledge
base):

-----------------------------------------SNIP----------------------------------
Error 5123: The Computer Name You Specified Is Already in Use
(Q126963)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:

Microsoft Windows for Workgroups version 3.11

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
When you start Microsoft Windows for Workgroups, you receive the
following error message:

The following error occurred while loading protocol number 0

Error 5123: The computer name you specified is already in use on the
network. Choose the Network Icon in Control Panel to specify a
different name. For more information choose the Help button.

CAUSE
This error can occur if you have multiple network cards in your
computer running on a single network segment and you are using the
NetBEUI network protocol. The NetBEUI protocol tries to register the
same computer name on the network once for each network card in the
computer. When NetBEUI tries to register the second card on the
network with the same computer name as the first card, the error
occurs.

RESOLUTION
Use Network Setup to remove the NetBEUI protocol from all but one of
the network cards in your computer.

-----------------------------------UNSNIP-------------------------------------

I did as suggested above but the problem still remains.
Any help would be appreciated.
TIA

please save this poor little SMC 7004BR from a kicking. ;>)
