USB not reconising CM anymore.

OK this is for a freind,
Im flumoxed on this one. Recntly said mate ran windows update and his
CM dissapeared. It wakes up when refresh is run on sytem devices
through System CP or the USB is plugged out and in. E/net is not n
option (possibly because of strict religious beliefs.....?). Network
adapter/ USB hubs and root have been uninstalled/reinstalled with all
permutations possible (or so I think. NE ideas?
MB:KT3 ultra 2 (viaKT333 chipset)
CM: Terayon TJ210
OS: win 98 SE
