It appears that Exchange keeps old versions of OWA under C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V##\ClientAccess\Owa and C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V##\ClientAccess\Owa\prem. It is my basic understanding that older versions are kept to prevent problems when all servers are not at the same patch level.

The long term net result of this, though, is that there is a LOT of space that gets used. It also marginally seems like a possible security issue if there is a bug in the older version of OWA and it still sits on the server. I have googled whether it is OK to delete these older files many times over the years, but have never found any official Microsoft guidance. There are multiple people that report it is OK to delete the older versions, but I have been reluctant to do it.

I obviously wouldn’t delete anything too recent there, but it does seems like versions that are years old could be safely deleted. Anybody here that could confirm/deny that?

To the best of my knowledge, MSFT has never made an official statement about those files.

Also to the best of my knowledge, they can be removed (although I personally haven’t done so).

I would rename them first, then reboot, and see if you get any errors. If not, it’s probably safe to remove them.

But note that should never install an old(er) CU of Exchange again…

Thanks.

Dear Team,

I did delete some old version in my prod environment without any issue. you can't copy/move the content to a backup place for some time, if you think that it will relax you.
