Hello Everyone,
I’ve stumbled upon a small problem in completing the December update cycle and catching up on past missed CU updates on our Exchange Server (2019 CU12 currently), because the license for the utility we use expired and was not renewed automatically by accident. The issue this creates it that I use the utility to stage the patching sequence so the Windows Update (we do not have WSUS or other and cannot add it) does not try to patch the Server o/s (2019 STD) and the Exchange at the same time.
I should mention that this is not a full-blown Exchange server with Databases etc., rather a hybrid solution (Edition: Coexistence) for our connectivity into the Microsoft 365 Exchange environment. However, I need to patch this thing before next Tuesday, due to audit requirements, etc. What would be the best way to go about it using only Windows Update directly, knowing it will just download and install all updates (o/s and Exchange, etc.) in one shot without being able to pause or control it.
Could I set the Exchange into maintenance mode
Put Exchange Server in maintenance mode:
Set-ServerComponentState "EX01-2019" -Component ServerWideOffline -State Inactive -Requester Maintenance
Verify Exchange Server is in maintenance mode:
Get-ServerComponentState "EX01-2019" | Select Component, State
then install all the Windows Updates for the 2019 Server STD operating system and the Exchange Server (2019) and when done after with both and the final reboot just take the Exchange out of maintenance mode again?
To take the server out of maintenance mode:
Set-ServerComponentState "EX01-2019" -Component ServerWideOffline -State Active -Requester Maintenance
Verify that all the required Exchange Server services are running:
Test-ServiceHealth "EX01-2019"
Many thanks in advance for your time.
Regards,
Laszlo

Exceptional and compassionate care for all.
Do it off hours and skip all of that and just patch it. I do an org with about 900 mailboxes in hybrid model the same as yours. It is never a problem since we don’t have DAG’s….I assume you do not. If you do, my answer changes.

No DAG… cheers
Any downside to placing it in maintenance mode first… then patch tutti and then back out of maintenance 😊
Thank you in advance for your time.

No downside but in a single server environment it doesn’t really do anything.
