Thebuy-in can be anywhere from five dollars to a hundred dollars for each square. It all depends on the clientele purchasing the super bowl squares. After the betters have purchased all squares, the host will then assign each box randomly in order to give everyone an equal and fair chance of winning and securing a coveted position across the pool.

At halftime, 7 remains the luckiest number while number 4 carries the highest odds of winning by the end of the 3rd quarter. Number 4,0 has the best chance of winning a couple of prizes. A 3-0 box carries a higher probability of the final playoffs for winning a grand prize.

A touching square is when you have at least one of the two winning numbers. The winning square for a quarter is often worth much less than the actual prize money. However, it may be enough to cover your entry fee.

Whatever the final score at the end of halftime, 1st quarter, 3rd quarter, and finals will be given to the person owning the corresponding square. For example, if the score is 17-10 at halftime, the person holding 7 and 0 squares would win that part of the game.

An exciting way to get everyone to watch the Big Game is with Super Bowl squares, a game where you don't need to understand football to play, and it could result in a big pay day, depending on how much money everyone is willing to pay for on it.

After all the squares have been bought, or everyone has bought their desired amount, whoever is in charge then randomly draws numbers across from 0-9, and assigns them to the top and side of the grid. Players can see what numbers their grid is assigned to, and then the game can begin with kickoff happens.

Winning typically involves the score by the end of each quarter. The numbers on each side of the grid represent the last digit of the AFC team's score and the other represents the last digit of the NFC team's score, and whoever has that square when the quarter ends, wins.

The most popular ways are each winner gets 25% of the winnings so its split evenly by the time the game ends. Another way is rewarding the winners of the halftime and final score of the game a larger cut. Example is giving those winners 30% while 20% is given to the first and third quarter. Another way is giving the winner of the final score the biggest payout of the night, like 40% while the first three quarters get only 20%.

The best squares to have are 0, 1, 3, 4 and 7 because they are the most frequent last digit numbers, since touchdowns are worth seven points and field goals are worth three. In a 2013 blog post, the Harvard Sports Analysis Collective wrote that the single best square to have is seven on the betting favorite's axis.

If you are looking for the best squares, the ones with 7-0 and 3-0 have been picked 20 times in Super Bowl history, according the Print Your Brackets, the most of any squares. Second with 19 selections is 0-0.

Hope you don't get 2, 5 and 9. According to the Harvard Sports Analysis Collective post from 2013, the 2-2 square and 2-5 square (two on the favorite's axis, five on the underdog's) are among the worst, because it usually takes some combination of safeties, missed extra points or other general strangeness to get there.

Are you hosting a Super Bowl party? Or going to one and looking for a fun way to watch and play along? The Super Bowl squares pool is one of the most popular games to play and we have you covered for Super Bowl LVIII between the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs.

All you have to do is print out this PDF and have everyone at your party pick one or more squares. At this point, it is completely random so anyone can play, whether they are an avid fan or this is their first football game of the year; the first square picked is as likely to win as the final one. Once the grid is full, randomize the numbers 0-9 on the top and 0-9 on the left side. Each square will now have a corresponding row and column number.

When each quarter of the Super Bowl ends, see if those two numbers match the end digits of each team's point total. An example: after the first quarter, if it is Chiefs 7, 49ers 3, then the player with the square that corresponds with 7 for the Chiefs and 3 for the 49ers is the winner. It would also be the same square if the score is instead 49ers 13, Chiefs 7: Only the last digit matters.

The prizes come at the end of each quarter, and for the final score. You don't have to be a fan of either team or even a football fan to play along. Pick the right square and match the end of quarter numbers and you win. Enjoy the Super Bowl!

We looked at all regular season and playoff games over the last 3 seasons -- a sample of over 850 games -- and broke down the scores per team by quarter. Overall, as you might have already guessed, 0 and 7 are the best numbers, followed by 3, then 4 and 6. Any combination of those five numbers is a good result to have.

There was only one combination that did not show up a single time across all quarters. If you draw the dreaded 2-2 square, you will have to root for something that we haven't seen in over 3,400 quarters.

Once you've filled out your grid with everyone's squares, you'll need to randomly fill out the top row and left column with 10 digits, 0-9. The draw can be part of the fun, as everyone finds out which squares are assigned to them, so feel free to make a show of it. There's no wrong way to do it, as long as it's random, so here are just a few suggestions:

From here, the game can be played a few different ways. Typically, one axis represents the last digit of the NFC team's score and the other represents the last digit of the AFC team's score. Whoever has the correct digits of the final score wins the pot; If the Bengals win 28-21, for example, the winning square would be where the No. 8 on the NFC axis meets the No. 1 on the AFC axis.

The values on each axis are usually assigned at random, so you might not have a choice here. But if you do, your best bet will generally be some combination of zeroes and/or sevens. In a 2013 blog post, the Harvard Sports Analysis Collective wrote that the single best square to have is seven on the favorite's axis (the Rams are the slight favorites this year) and zero on the underdog's, with the 0-0 square a close second. The Washington Post lists 0-0 as the best square to have, with the two combinations of seven and zero (7-0 or 0-7) right behind it. Three, four and one also aren't bad numbers to have from an odds standpoint.

Any combination of twos or fives. According to the aforementioned Harvard Sports Analysis Collective post from 2013, the 2-2 square and 2-5 square (two on the favorite's axis, five on the underdog's) are among the worst because it usually takes some combination of safeties, missed extra points or other general strangeness to get there.

One of the most popular variations on Super Bowl squares is to pay out 25% of the pot at the end of every quarter, rather than all of it at the end of the game. (Or, in some cases, 20% at the end of the first and third quarters, and 30% at the end of each half). This makes it more likely that there will be multiple winners, albeit with smaller shares of the pot.

I simulated 49ers vs. Chiefs 10,000 times to highlight the best Super Bowl squares. Below, you can get my projected win probabilities for each quarter and the final score, along with the combinations you'll want to target.

If your square intersects at Chiefs 7 and 49ers 0, then you win the first quarter if the Chiefs are leading the game 7-0. If Kansas City wins 27-20, then hey, you win the full game, too, since the last digit of each score is a match with your numbers.

Don't fill numbers in until every square has a name in it. That way, the first participants can't take the best numbers. You'll be hoping to get numbers like 0, 3 and 7 since football games often end with scores that feature these numbers.

If the score is 10-7 and the AFC team has the lead after the first quarter, the AFC number is 0 and the NFC number is 7, so the winner there would be WR, or Wes Reynolds, another one of our VSiN authors.

With this example, those are your numbers for the score of each quarter and the final score of the game. Some people may choose to change the numbers for each quarter or redraw numbers between quarters.

Not to get too difficult, but some Super Bowl Squares contests will do something like paying the person with the reverse score or paying out something to the squares that touch the winning square in order to get more people involved.

While all numbers are possible in one way or another, there are some numbers that hit more often than others. Remember, you should NOT draw numbers until all of the squares are completely full, otherwise it creates an unfair advantage to those who sign up first and you are also unlikely to get all of the squares filled.

As you can see, 0s and 7s are the best numbers to wind up with in Super Bowl Square contests. Any number is indeed possible, some are likelier than others, especially with the nature of scoring in the NFL typically by 7s and 3s.

DraftKings Sportsbook has bettable options for those looking to play squares, without going through the process of doing it the traditional way. These are called DK Squares. For example, for Super Bowl LVIII, you can get +280 on Chiefs 0 and 49ers 0 for all four quarters, so scores like 0-0, 10-10, 20-20, etc. would win, regardless of quarter. And, of course, you could win up to four times with your numbers.

Super Bowl 58 is almost here! The Kansas City Chiefs take on the San Francisco 49ers for the Vince Lombardi Trophy on February 11, 2024. The game takes place at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, and you can bet that sports fans across the country will engage in Super Bowl Squares contests.

For a bit of fun, novice and serious bettors alike might give Super Bowl squares pools and some silly prop bets a go. You can play a Super Bowl squares pool with friends and co-workers, or even find a website that offers Super Bowl squares online. Find a bit more about how these work and if you might favor a wager on one or the other.
