So we have some long and complex data analysis flows which we a reusing to analyse the cleanliness of different data sets. We have a team that are all using and improving these data flows or the set of underlying macros involved.

Naturally the processing time keeps on increasing as we add more checks. I was wondering if there was a way of seeing a breakdown of overall run time by individual tools. Specifically where some tools are hidden in macro's. I know you get the little runtime window whilst the flow is running and the overall run time. However what i am looking for is an output that had details about the runtime for each tool. Perhaps as an alteryx file that could then be analysed.

Is the tool performance profiling any help? You select it in the Runtime tab (enable performance profiling). The results show up in the Results Window at the end of the workflow. You can go to the Messages in the Results Window and right-click to copy them out and store them.

Within your Configuration pane (Runtime), you can select to "Enable Performance Profiling" (pictured below). At the end of your workflow you will see a sorted list of the tools used and the amount of time used in each tool. In the example (even further below), you'll see that the majority of time is spent in the SUMMARIZE tool. As the summarize tool is a "Blocking" tool and because it is the only blocking tool, it is logical that the majority of time spent will be there. Remember to uncheck this option once you have reviewed the workflow performance. This feature does slow down (I don't know by how much) the workflow.

My first question related to data volumes. the preview systems Cronus demo data is tiny right? The clients I work with tend to have at large record counts to analyse. Is Microsoft on SaaS going to allow the performance impact those data sizes might cause? I created and posted 2352 sales invoices with 238,000 lines between them. Let's push that data in and see what happens.

Preparing the analysis with close to 417 records off the 100k limit took approximately 15 seconds to calculate, so reasonable, maybe not quite as fast as a pivot in Excel, but the data does have to be retrieved rather than just being on another tab, so more than understandable in my view.

And a hundred thousand records is a reasonable number, you might struggle with year-on-year analysis, but maybe you still export to Excel for that? For the quick operation analysis numbers you need in BC it's should be adequate. in any case in the release documentation Microsoft state 'We're also working on ways to increase the data set size above 100,000 rows.' so watch this space.

Most companies do the same analysis repetitively so being able to retrieve your analysis view with the same filters and criteria is really useful, and the immediate answer is that Microsoft has provisioned this via the same ability to save views on each listing page.

Anyone playing with this feature is going to pretty quickly wish more fields were available on the list they are reporting against. The example I hit here was that reporting against document lines, then having fields from the document header and even the related master data such as customer, vendor and item would just be so useful.

Over the last few years, I tried hard to get clients to not add fields to list views and especially for flowfields and lookups to related tables, to put them into fact boxes. That might come back to bite me now that they need them in their analysis views.

My recommendations were for performance reasons, but I fear this new feature is going understandably, to make those recommendations ignored. I wonder if the future, we might have a property we could define on a page field that means that field is only shown when in analysis mode?

Columns and values can only be selected when visible on the list, I guess that is entirely logical, but I suspect that a lot of fields will get added to the list just because they are wanted in analysis views.

All of this reminded me to PowerBI dataset and the evolution we went through to get that truly powerful. One of the most useful is one I can see being needed here which is calculated fields. Where I need to summarise a value in LCY but its doesn't exist at standard would be the obvious use case - being able to create a value that equals "Amount * Currency Factor" would be super powerful and avoid adding lots of fields to the table extensions just for the purposes of reporting.

We are about to launch a Power BI Dashboard to external users and I have just realised that they will be able to use Analyse in Excel. It is not ideal that they can use Export but having external users being able to use Analyse in Excel gives them far to much access to the data and will mean that we would not be able to laucnh. Does anyone know if there is a way to turn this off? I know that you can turn off export but this stops export working in all instances which is not what we really want. However, if useing the admin disable export will disable analyse in Excel that might be the only option.

If you hide all (or certain) tables for the report view (right click on table in Data or Relationship view in power BI desktop, then select Hide in Report View, then publish again. ), then Analyze in Excel will not export this tables.

Think about a huge dataset that potentially covers a lot of use cases and that is used for a report that only uses a small part of that big model. Sharing this single report will expose all data to be analyzed and loaded into Excel. That's not only an issue for external users but vor internals as well because it circumvents permissions a report creator might have in mind when explicitely not including a field into his/her report!

But they cannot view/export the underlying data - nor via the Excel download option shown above, nor via the "Analyse in Excel" link topright. The "Analyse in Excel" link is still there, but only opens an empty Excel file:

We make extensive use of that feature and build big datasets that are used multiple times in reports. While you must be member of the workspace to access the dataset with live query, Analyze in Excel offers the same capabilities when the report is simply shared.

Thank you very much @GilbertQ this has worked for us as well. We tried turning off Analyse in Excel but you are correct that you need to turn off teh export feature as well. This is an overly blunt tool as it has now turned both features off for all dashboards which is far less than ideal but we at least have some control. Thank you very much for letting us know the solution.

It was great to find a way to turn off analyse in Excel but the issue is that turning it off disables a major part of Power BI that we were planning to be able to use for internal users. The way of turning analyse in Excel and export off is currently far too blunt and we really need to have this control at a dashboard level.

The other option is that we move to Power BI Embeded for external users which has some advantages and is an options that we are pursuing. The only issues with this is that I have not been able to find any way to trurn off export in Power BI Embeded. Does anyone know if there is anyway that export can be turned off in Power BI Embeded.

@dcresp have you validated that the setting in the Power BI Admin Portal "Allow users to Analyze in Excel with on-premises data sets" is turned to "off" - I haven't tested this setting out, but it seems like it may turn this off.

Thanks @Seth_C_Bauer I tried this. This does not seem to work for external users. In fact it does not seem to have worked even for internal users. I expect the issue is that it is a dataset that is not getting refreshed automatically as I do not want external users to have to have Power BI Pro.

Based on what I know, Analyze in Excel would only be available under dataset, sharing dashboard won't share the dataset, and exporting data from Reports would only gain access to the data shown in the reports.

By the way, currently it has no available way to disable Analyze in Excel option (Edited, I mean in addition to the method through Admin Portal), you may consider submit an idea on this topic, to allow it work without disable Export data.

Thanks for the responses. I have established that there is no way to turn off Analyse in Excel which I see as a huge oversight by Microsoft as it gives external users full access to all the data in the data model behind the Power BI report. We are now moving to set up a Power BI embedded structure.

This study first examines the methods presented in ISO 12913 for analysing and representing soundscape data by applying them to a large existing database of soundscape assessments. The key issue identified is the inability of the standard methods to summarise the soundscape of locations and groups. The presented solution inherently considers the variety of responses within a group and provides an open-source visualisation tool to facilitate a nuanced approach to soundscape assessment and design. Several demonstrations of the soundscape distribution of urban spaces are presented, along with proposals for how this approach can be used and developed.

In a recent editorial paper on Soundscape Assessment, Axelsson and colleagues observe that it is important to critically discuss current theories and models in soundscape studies and to examine their effectiveness, while also looking at how to integrate different methods and perspectives for the discipline to make further advancements (Axelsson , 2019). This work was mainly aimed at addressing the issue of meaningful comparability and representation of soundscape assessments. Part 2 of the ISO 12913 standard itself does not provide ultimate answers: the technical specifications recommend multiple methods, as consensus around a single protocol could not be reached. This diversity of methodological approaches should be interpreted as a fact that soundscape theory is still under development and, for this reason, the standardisation work should probably take a step back and focus on developing a reference method for comparability among soundscape studies, rather than a single protocol for soundscape data collection. Some attempts have indeed already been made in literature for the different methods proposed in the ISO/TS 12913-2:2018 (Aletta , 2019; Jo , 2020). Neither the standard nor the general soundscape literature has settled on effective methods of analysing and representing the data that results from these protocols. Data visualisations are particularly important for understanding and communicating information as multifaceted as soundscape perception (Tufte, 2001). Although it is unlikely that any single method will be sufficient, attempts should be made to both facilitate future advancements in this realm and to develop a first step approach that captures the inherent uncertainty in perception studies, since including uncertainty is considered one of the core principles of good data visualisation (Midway, 2020).
