Paul, welcome to Issue 3 of the Museum Monthly newsletter.

Graham Turner

Prior to each home game Wolves Museum hosts the Matchday Museum Experience, and at the Aston Villa game was a first and a very special guest appearance.

We were delighted to welcome Graham Turner, who is the first former manager to take the role of the VIP guest for the Matchday Museum Experience. It was a perfect fixture to host Graham within the Museum, as he managed Aston Villa between 1984 and 1986 after a fantastic 6-year stint at Shrewsbury Town.

In September 1986 Turner became Wolves Manager, less than two weeks after he had departed Villa Park. What Graham Turner achieved at Wolves will always be remembered. Graham is one of the most important managers we have ever had.

Wolves were close to promotion in the first season in 1986-87 but lost out to Aldershot in the 1987 Play Off Final. This however was a blessing in disguise. Wolves were Division 4 Champions in 1988 and won the Sherpa Van Trophy the same year. The Division 3 title followed in 1989.

Graham Turner returned Wolves to the second tier in his first two full seasons at the club. This was also achieved in the best possible way with two back-to-back League titles.

Both titles are very special here at Wolves and the Sherpa Van Final win is also extremely iconic and such a key moment in our history. This was the Renaissance of Wolverhampton Wanderers after the huge struggles prior to that which had seen Wolves nearly go out of business twice.

Thanks to Graham, we were firmly re-established as a Second-Tier club.

Graham was also very unlucky in the 1993-94 season, as had it not been for numerous serious injuries to key players it may well have been Graham Turner who returned Wolves to the topflight.

Wolves were also close to the FA Cup Semi Final that year but narrowly lost to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the Quarter Final.

After departing Wolves in 1994 Graham went onto to do some amazing work at Hereford and another fine job at Shrewsbury Town which meant Graham’s management career ended in 2014 at the same club it had started at in 1978.

Graham Turner is a true Wolves legend, and it was an honour to host him in the Museum for the Matchday Museum Experience.

VIP Tours

Team mates back in town!

It was back to the 1990s, 2000s & The Play Off Final as two former teammates were our guest on the VIP tours.

First up was Lee Naylor. 333 appearances from 1995 to 2007, Naylor made his debut on 12th October 1997 at St Andrews in the West Midlands Derby. Naylor is one of only a few 17 years olds to make their debuts, other examples are Robbie Keane, David Heywood & Tim Flowers. Lee Naylor as we know ended up becoming a first team regular and was a huge part in the amazing Play Off win in 2003.

We also were told some great stories from Lee’s time at Celtic too. It was great to see Lee Naylor back at Molineux.

We also saw the return of Michael Oakes. Oakes was at Wolves from 1999 to 2007 and chalked up 220 appearances, including being ever present in the league in both 2000-01 and 2001-02 seasons. Michael entertained our guests with stories about his career both at Wolves and at Aston Villa & Cardiff.

It was great to have Lee and Michael back this month as they both played a huge part in that era at our football club. Many thanks to them both for their time.

Following on from last month’s USA theme in Quirky Quirks, we were also delighted to welcome the ITV Local news team to our museum who did a feature on the LA Wolves film which premiered in October and is now available for Wolves Supporters.

Please ensure you watch this film when it comes out as we can assure you it is a fantastic production.

Pictured is ITV’s Dan Salisbury-Jones, Russel Jones (GM for Marketing & Growth), and legend and our own resident Wolverhampton Film Star, Phil ‘Lofty’ Parkes. At the premiere we also welcomed many of our fantastic supporters as guests, and local heroes Muriel and Albert Bates along with their son, Kelvin.

Wolves Around The World

Central America, USA, Canada

We now move East of Canada and bypass Greenland and arrive at Iceland. This allows us

to explore Scandinavia and the surrounding area.

Wolves have a big following in Scandinavia, due to Wolves vs Sunderland being shown on television in Scandinavia on 29th November 1969, playing at our iconic Molineux Stadium. Wolves beat Sunderland that day, with Hughie Curran scoring the only goal of the game. We believe it was shown on Swedish television and this travelled to other parts of the region. This was the start of Wolves having a big following in Scandinavia. Swede Wolves are still going strong to this day and their logo and flag can be seen at Molineux at various points during the season. Wolves have also visited this region extensively on pre-season and for friendlies dating way back to 1946.

Now onto our players and representatives of Scandinavia and that region.
