Dear everyone, I was watching the BBC World Service, and went to the website http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/8173400.stm about the the British Law Society warning students to think twice on embarking on a law degree.
My questions are these:
(1) Is there a similar situation in Australia?
(2) Of those people in the UK who did get a foot in the door, how did they succeed?
Thank you,

Monica Kelly

Hello

That is an interesting article you have distributed to us, but I think
there are 2 important distinctions between the UK graduates that are
discussed in the article and us as late Australian lawyers.

Firstly, the UK has been much harder hit by the GFC than we have in
Australia and I direct your attention to an article on the front page of
today's SMH titled 'Rate rise looming, warns top banker; Recovery on
track' by Peter Martin. According to Martin Australia will rise out of
the GFC earlier than expected and that the recovery will come sooner
rather than later.

And secondly, as late lawyers we have broad experience that we are able
to offer firms that are experiencing difficult times, specifically I am
referring to marketing and business skills. I view the GFC as an impetus
to shine next to the younger lawyers who likely have little experience
in how to identify and target prospective clients to market effectively
to them.

I hope the NSW Law Society is not advising students to avoid pursuing
law as a career because I think that would be short sighted. We may not
currently have a glut of jobs for new lawyers however this situation is
temporary and it would be a shame to warn interested and talented people
off law as a career.

In regards to how to get a foot in the door, as with most jobs you need
to demonstrate to the prospective employer why you are different from
the other candidates and why you should be selected over them. I don't
wish to harp on about this, but I actually think that creating such a
distinction should be easier for late lawyers than young ones.

I would be interested to hear others' comments.

Cheers

Monica

Anthony
As the dance party email that you received is not to be found anywhere
on this group site (ie. it is not a message on the Later Lawyers home
or discussion page) it is a message that only you received and so must
have come either from someone you know or because you have subscribed
to some other group. Anyone can get themselves a gmail address so it
could have come from anyone you have given your email address to. I
note that your address is a UNSW one - university systems are
notorious for being prone to hackers, bugs etc so maybe that has
something to do with it.
As previously advised I am moderating all messages from new members
and therefore if you are receiving emails from non-members it is very
unlikely to have anything to do with us. I suggest that if you are
unsure about the source of any message that you do not open it and
either contact google yourself to report the suspect address (after
checking the NSW Later Lawyers home page first to check whether it's a
message that everyone has received) rather than send a message to
everyone who has subscribed to this group.
Best regards
Felicia

Dear Felicia,
Thank you, it is good that this group is moderated. I organize my emails to
go through the Outlook program on my pc. I don't need to go through any html
style email system (eg gmail, yahoo mail, unsw's email etc).
I don't subscribe to many group because of the risk of getting
inappropriate/unsuitable emails.

Dear everyone,
when you go to the www.google.com.au main page, then click the word "Groups"
above the word "Google", then put in the search box "later laywers
network", you will see all messages that were ever posted by members of the
nsw later lawyers network. Should the whole world know about our group?

Dear Anthony
Yes, we do want the whole world to know about the NSW Later Lawyers
Network - ie. so we can network and share
ideas etc with each other.
As I have previously advised on two occasions, I am moderating
messages from non-members and new-members
so anything 'inappropriate' doesn't get through.
Felicia
