Hi Everyone

I think this is a great idea so thought I would get the ball rolling and in introduce myself.  I have been a prosecutor for NSW Police Force since 2005 and was admitted as a lawyer in December 2008.  I currently work at Glebe Coroners court as a Coronial Advocate which is, as you can imagine, a very heart wrenching job at times but is none the less very interesting and at other times, rewarding.  I’m currently completing my Masters in Law which is why I am on the computer at this time Saturday morning instead of doing something much more exciting and less stressful!!  Prior to joining the police in 2003 I had an executive career working as a management consultant and trainer in the corporate arena ... but I had always wanted to be a barrister so looks like I might just get there in the next couple of years!!  Interesting times ahead for us all I’d say!

Anyway, I look forward to seeing this group grow and to meeting some of you in the future.  Until then ...

Kind regards

Dale G. Ralph

HI Dale and Lise and everyone else
I completed Law Degree and Diploma in Legal Practice in 2003 - the degree at
Newcastle Uni and the Diploma (which I have since converted to a Masters in
Legal Practice) at ANU. I had difficulty finding work in law but had a
background as nurse and grants manager so worked at the Law and Justice
Foundation for a year while doing probono on the community legal sector in
Sydney. I then worked in the community legal sector (Womens Legal Services
and Domestic Violence Advocacy Service) for a couple of years - family law,
some policy work and court work with women in regard to AVOs predominantly.
I loved this but my husband lived in the Hunter and I was travelling back
and forth for around 3 years and the money was not great!
I obtained a position as an in-house lawyer for Hunter New England Area
Health Service for 13 months - this was a trial only and so after this time
no job! I then worked for 2 months for a private law firm on a commission
basis which I hated. During that time I applied for a casual position at
Newcastle Uni in School of Nursing and Midwifery teaching - I accepted a
part time position and absolutely love it! I was only there for about 3
weeks when I was asked to teach for the School of Law which I Have been
doing ever since so able to utilise both experience in health and law. I am
also doing a PhD on domestic violence which overlaps both areas also! I
currently teach law to nurses and other non lawyers but have also taught in
criminal law, legal system and method and health law to law students. I
turned the big 50 last year and have given up my Practising Certificate but
remain an Associate of the Law Society!
Cheers Lyn

Hello all

I graduated from law about 3 years ago after 10 years of part time study, work and raising 2 kids.

I've been with Maddocks, a mid-tier firm for about 2 years and I work in public law, governance and specialise in Local Government. Prior to joining Maddocks I worked for 5 years in local government as a legal services coordinator, hence my interest in public law.

Maybe we should arrange an evening where we can all meet - possibly at the Law Society? I have enjoyed reading about the diverse backgrounds we have all come from but it would be lovely to put faces to the names. I am happy to arrange it, if people are interested.

Hoping to hear some more interesting stories.

Best regards

Monica Kelly

I graduated law from UWS at Parramatta (in the graduate program) in 2004,
but remained in the IT industry, having been in that area since about 1988
(and done it as a hobby since about 1984), and been a Chief Technical
Officer since about 1992. In about May of 2007 the company I had been
working in since 1991 was sold, and in January 2008 the new parent decided
to clean out senior management.

At the time I was aware of the effects of the subprime crisis in the US (and
hence the coming of what is now called the Global Financial Crisis). In this
context I thought this an opportune time for a change rather than marking
time to pursue a diminishing pool of executive level roles in a declining
market. I managed to get a late admission to the College of Law for the
course starting the following month. I did my work experience component with
Parry Carroll, found I liked solicitor's work more than I expected to, and
stayed on after my admission in December.

Hi Everyone,

I completed the MLLP at UTS in 2007 (at age 50) and did my PLT prac at
the Public Interest Advocacy Centre in Sydney as a volunteer working 4
days a week (and 2 days a week for myself to make some much needed
money).

I was admitted in December 2007 and have been working as a Tipstaff to
Haylen J. at the NSW Industrial Court since Oct 2007. (I must have
applied for 70 jobs over a period of 5 months and through persistence
and sheer determination I finally got what I wanted just as I was
finishing my prac hours)

I am currently half way through my Masters in Industrial Property at
UTS which is all online but have taken this year off study for a touch
of sanity/real life.

My background includes 10 years as an Acupuncturist/Herbalist with my
own clinics - this allowed me to work child friendly hours and also to
study Law part-time for the 5 years it took me to do the MLLP, and
prior to this 12 years as a Radio Communications Operator with the NSW
Police Service where the shift work allowed me to fit in my first lot
of studies.

Regards,

Ann Adams MLLP B.Hlth Sc (Acu) M.Herb. Med
