Hi everyone. I posted an introductory message two days ago, but just thought that I would add my comments to the current discussion. As a late lawyer in a regional area for 4 years, I can relate to the experiences posted by others. The problem as I see it is this. The practice of law is never just about the law. More often than not it also involves the art of persuasion and negotiation which suits wider experience in work and life . Some firms are oblivious to this, and to how well clients respond to a solicitor that is able to deal with them in a mature, holistic manner. Firms that are poorly managed often do not have the skills or the will to develop their human resources and instead focus on rising costs and increased competition as the key issues. Or prefer younger paralegals with no legal training to fully qualified solicitors because they often feel threatened by such a person (especially mature person), and because they think it is cheaper, and do not understand that clients come to the firm for effective legal advice and guidance from a qualified practitioner.
