Just found your group through the article in Lawyers Weekly. It's a
great idea. I'm in Canberra so I won't be able to attend any events,
but online support is good too. I'll be finished my Juris Doctor by
the end of next January and then plan to start Practical Legal
training. I worked in the public service for many years but always
wanted to be a lawyer, so one day I decided that I would do that! It
has been wonderful studying at UC, the majority of students doing the
JD are mature age, in fact 2 students in their 20s kept saying "We're
not that young you know" It was quite funny. I have been working and
studying since 2007. It has not been easy. I was lucky enough to get
a job in a small local law firm last December. I am basically working
as a legal secretary, without having had any training in that area,
apart from being able to touch type. It is very interesting seeing
the enormous range of legal work that a traditional suburban law firm
gets. My expectations for salary and the type of job I could get were
very low, so I guess that helped.
I was inspired back in 2007 (or thereabouts) by hearing that someone
achieved their law degree from Uni of Sydney at Age 91. The first
president of the UC Law Students Association (Isaacs Society) was
admitted to practice in NSW at the age of 58.
Anyway, good luck to all WISER Lawyers out that in your endeavours. I
had better finish up now, I have an exam next Friday!
