Hi everyone - I thought these articles might spark some interesting
discussion and would love to hear your views. Also a reminder to
please let me know your suggestions about potential speakers for our
speakers program. I must confess that I am finding it difficult to
develop a list of later lawyers who have been in practice (or
academia) for any length of time - so if you know of anyone, I'd
appreciate it if you could let me know.
Best regards,
Felicia
PS - Last night I attended the launch of the 2009 SULS (that's Sydney
Uni Law Society) Women's Mentoring Program where Justice Virginia Bell
spoke about the continuing need for women lawyers to support each
other even though as she said, female lawyers and judges are now "two
a penny". I think she's absolutely right and therefore would
encourage all of you to participate in programs like this if at all
possible. I also met my mentor - an amazingly accomplished woman who
has already given me some pretty sage advice which I will share with
you (yes, even with you men because as my friend Jake said 'men only
have tormentors, not mentors'):
- concentrate on marks because academic results matter
- think about where you want to be in 5 years time (not just
personally but professionally) because this will dictate choices made
now
- try and get as much and as varied experience as you can, even if in
a small firm because you get responsibility early and get to work
across a range of practice areas on behalf of both plaintiffs and
defendants.
