The Texas Association Against Sexual Assault is seeking a Primary Prevention Specialist to join our prevention team in building the capacity of individuals, organizations, institutions, and communities to end sexual violence through a primary prevention approach across Texas.
TAASA’s approach to sexual violence prevention is rooted in social justice work and focuses on promoting the factors that reduce and prevent sexual violence, such as equity and healthy, connected, and diverse communities, while also challenging the attitudes, inequities, and social norms that contribute to all forms of violence, including sexual violence.

Position Overview
The Primary Prevention Specialist serves on a team of 6 individuals who provide support and guidance to rape crisis centers throughout Texas and the communities they serve, as well as allied organizations around prevention of sexual violence.
Providing capacity-building assistance to these organizations encompasses the following duties that are largely shared among team members:
· Training development and delivery
· Coaching and one-on-one consultation with prevention workers
· Planning and hosting a statewide conference for prevention workers and other regional training opportunities
· Collaborative development and modification of curricula, toolkits, and other materials focused on topics relevant to sexual violence prevention
· Cultivating a community of practice among prevention workers within specific regions of Texas
· Create online spaces for prevention workers to meet emerging needs
*Please note that this position does not involve crisis intervention, counseling, or survivor advocacy, or, currently, the direct implementation of prevention programming.
In addition to these shared tasks, this Primary Prevention Specialist will promote community engagement, community mobilization, and coalition building as key strategies for successful sexual violence prevention programming. This will involve:
· Providing training and support regarding promising practices in community engagement, community mobilization, and coalition building to local rape crisis centers across Texas
· Researching and developing materials and resources for the field related to community engagement, community mobilization, and coalition building
Qualifications
TAASA’s work is rooted in a social justice approach to ending sexual violence, so ideal candidates will possess a demonstrated commitment to social justice and equity and experience working in diverse communities around issues of violence (including sexual violence), inequity, health disparities, and/or other related issues. Ideal candidates will have experience implementing programming designed to create community-level change.
Requirements
An ideal candidate will possess the following skills and/or experience:
· Experience developing and implementing community engagement, community mobilization, and/or coalition building efforts
· Experience developing and/or implementing anti-violence efforts, particularly experience with social media or social norms change efforts
· Exceptional research, writing, and editing skills related to materials development
· Flexibility, and ability to multi-task and pivot quickly to changing work duties
Preferences
The following skills, qualities, and experiences are also valuable to this position:
· Provision of support to other organizations around prevention programming and/or community engagement efforts to end sexual violence or other connected issues
· Development and/or implementation of programs with culturally-specific communities
· Clear understanding of the differences between risk reduction and primary prevention approaches to sexual violence prevention
· Strong understanding of the social determinants of health and/or health disparities
· Experience identifying and developing relationships and partnerships with community members and organizations
· Commitment to team work with an ability to work independently
· Proficiency in Spanish and English
Education
Applicants with various levels of education and experience will be considered. Areas of study that are relevant to the position include public health, women’s/gender studies, social work, sociology, psychology, anthropology, and community education. Equivalent experience is highly valued.
Details
Length of Position: The grant that funds this position will end on January 31, 2024. TAASA anticipates applying for and receiving this same grant for the next funding cycle that will start on February 1, 2024, and TAASA has received this grant for over 15 years. However, and as with all grant-funded positions, we cannot guarantee that this position will be funded from year to year.
Position Location: Austin, Texas (flexibility during the first two years of the position)
Classification: Full-time, non-exempt
Reports to: Director of Prevention
Salary: salary starting at $52,500 (commensurate with experience)
