Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The Violence Prevention and Advocacy Services department provides support and advocacy services to individuals affected by gender-based violence and strives to prevent all forms of gender-based violence on campus. This department works collaboratively with partners on campus to address the comprehensive needs of survivors of violence and address its root causes.

Position Summary

This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

UNC Chapel Hill seeks an energetic, compassionate, self-motivated professional to serve as a Gender Violence Services Coordinator (GVSC), to support individuals impacted by gender-based violence and harassment. This individual should be a creative problem-solver, exhibit excellent judgment in difficult situations, and have the ability to effectively communicate complex and difficult information with nuance and compassion. The GVSCs support UNC undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, staff, community members, alumni, and secondary survivors including colleagues, friends, and family members. This position provides confidential support and advocacy for all UNC affiliated individuals impacted by any form of gender-based violence and harassment including sexual harassment, sexual violence, sexual exploitation, interpersonal violence, and stalking. 

Primary duties include the following:
* Providing direct service support and case management services including emotional support, academic support, accompaniment, referrals, safety planning, and consultation
* Assistance in understanding reporting options including, law enforcement, UNC’s Title IX and Policy on Prohibited Discrimination, Harassment and Related Misconduct student and employee procedures, as well as local University reporting procedures external to UNC-CH
* Collaboration with reporting entities including University and law enforcement
* Outreach, training, and education to University and Community groups
* Cross-campus collaboration with additional campus partners
* Professional outreach and educational presentations to University and community groups

The ideal candidate will serve as a learner and engage with individuals from all backgrounds and identities. Applicants should have a thorough understanding of trauma informed practices and impeccable attention to detail.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities associated with the delivery and/or management of student support functions, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and at least 1 year of relevant experience in substitution.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

* Ability to handle confidential and sensitive situations with diplomacy and excellent judgment and to act calmly with impeccable discretion. 
* Superior interpersonal and organizational skills.
* High-quality written and oral communication skills, including the ability to communicate succinctly and with diverse stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Master’s degree in higher education, social work or other relevant discipline. 
* A minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible work experience in direct service advocacy or a related field.
* Knowledge and familiarity with Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), and The Jeanne Clery Act. 
* Ability to understand the needs of the University and work collaboratively in a wide array of situations with diverse groups of students, faculty, staff, and community partners. 
Demonstrated success in multi-tasking and efficacy in a fast-pasted environment. 
Robust strategies for keeping organized and serving as part of a collaborative team.
* Knowledge of student development best practices and a strong desire to provide a supportive environment for students. 
* Familiarity with accessible social media practices.
