Safe Hands

In the current scenario of Delhi, it is pretty evident that the streets of Delhi are not a place where women can feel secure while walking alone. Since the number of eve-teasing cases have increased sharply, it is the need of the hour to equip women of Delhi with something which makes them feel secure while travelling through streets of Delhi.

Stree, an initiative by NSS IITD, has come up with a technical solution to tackle the situation. We have developed an Android APP called "Safe-Hands". The app can be used to send out distress messages to your dear ones, in case you sense any imminent danger. This will help the women feel more confident while going out alone in roads/streets or any other place.

What does the app do: On a single press of a button, the app sends out distress messages to all the contacts stored in the app. The message contains the coordinates of your location and your distance and direction from a node(similar to landmark) stored  in the app. Using this information, your location can be traced and immediate help can be sent to you by your dear ones.

How does the app do this: The app uses GPS of your phone to determine your location. Use of GPS eliminates the need of an internet connection on your phone. Just in case, GPS fails to work, the app uses GPRS to determine your location.

Unique features: The app works  on a node(landmark) based model. There are pre-stored nodes in the app's database which contain coordinates of prominent locations in Delhi. This allows app to send your distance and direction from a node in the app, apart from your coordinates, making it much more easier for your relatives to locate you. For example "Hauz khas metro station" is a node. So the message goes saying "I am at distance 100 m from Hauz khas metro station in North direction".

There are other features which makes app highly customizable and user friendly. The exact details/instructions will be sent to you with app itself.

We highly recommend the app for students who are going for an internship during the summer vacations. Since most of you might be going to cities which would be completely new to you and you would not be feeling really confident while travelling in the city, the app can be a real help to you.

Simply install the app on your android phone. People going to new cities must save the locations you are going to frequently visit as nodes in the app. This would include place of stay, place of work or home of a relative in that city. You can add as many contacts in the app as you want, but it is recommended that you add a contact living nearby so that in any grave situation help can reach you as soon as possible.
