Introductory Session on
E-Waste and its Management
Have you ever wondered what happens to the discarded electronic devices from your homes and other places? Where does it go or who takes them?
About E-Waste
Electronic waste or e-waste describes discarded electrical or electronic devices. Used electronics which are destined for reuse, resale,
salvage, recycling or disposal are also considered e-waste.Electronic waste (e-waste) is one of the fastest-growing pollution problems worldwide given the presence of a variety of toxic substances which can contaminate the environment and threaten human health, if disposal protocols are not meticulously managed.
Why E-Waste Management is necessary?
Rapid changes in technology, changes in media, falling prices and planned obsolescence have resulted in a fast-growing surplus of electronic waste around the globe. An estimated 50 million tons of E-waste are produced each year. Electronics are packed with toxic chemicals—arsenic, lead, and poly-brominated flame retardants. Most of our e-waste ends up in landfills, where toxic metals leach into the environment.
About the Session:
The session will be started by a documentary screening on E-waste followed by a Q/A session. It will be conducted by the NGO Toxics Links. Toxics Link is an environmental NGO, dedicated to bring toxics-related information into the public domain, both relating to struggles and problems at the grassroots as well as global information to the local levels.
