Hello, neighbors,
Below are a collection of announcements and items for interest to folks in the neighborhood. We try to clump these together into one longer email so that we can keep the number of emails low.

From the North Street NA:

If you have not yet renewed your dues, it is time! (if you have renewed since August 1st, you are all set, but if you haven’t, your membership expired August 31st). You can renew at http://northstreetna.org/join-nsna

If you haven’t filled out the survey yet, please share your thoughts with us! http://northstreetna.org/survey

From the Emerson Eken Arts Walk:

We need volunteers to pick up and distribute flyers throughout the Madison area. You can contact the organizers here to get more information about where they are seeking flyer distribution.

From Community Action Coalition

As you may know, CAC is a nonprofit Community Action Agency serving Dane, Jefferson, and Waukesha Counties, where we work to address poverty.

Every three years, we conduct a required and informative Community Needs Assessment to hear directly from our communities and learn how CAC can best provide its support. With feedback provided by community members and partners through this process, we hope to identify needs, resources, and gaps within our community, so we can align our services and create connections that are meaningful, helpful, and informed by the people we serve.

Privacy Statement: All survey responses to either survey will remain anonymous. The data we collect will only be used for the purposes of this research. We will not submit any identifying information, demographics, or individual responses to any other agencies or authorities.

We are very excited to hear from you all and the community throughout this process. CAC anticipates the findings from this research will be available and shared on our website by April 2025. We would be happy to share the assessment report with those interested at that time as well.

From the City of Madison -- Roth Street

NSNA received an email from the city about a land use application filed for 2248-2256 Roth Street.

This property now belongs to the City, and they want to demolish it to add it to the park, and rezone it as Park rather than residential.

This will go to the Plan Commission on September 23rd.

From the City of Madison -- Bus Rapid Transit
Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) begins on Sunday, September 22nd. The city has created a page with descriptions and videos showing how to use BRT, including the new tap cards to pay your fare, and the inside-the-bus bike racks.

From the City of Madison -- Budget "Ask Me Anything" session
The city is hosting an "ask me anything" session with the finance director and other staff. You can get details here, including information about the 2025 Madison budget and referendum.

Flooding Survey by UW Madison

You are invited to participate in a study by The Water Systems and Society research group at UW-Madison! Our study is focused on learning about flooding across neighborhoods in Madison, WI, with special interest in understanding the experiences of socially vulnerable communities. We invite all 18+ year old residents of Madison to participate. You will be asked to complete a survey to help us learn more about flooding and water management in your neighborhood. You may also elect to participate in an interview for us to learn more about flooding in your neighborhood and your personal experiences. If you choose to participate, you are eligible to receive a summary of research findings if interested. Email the research team to ask how.

Click here to access the survey.

From Madison Methodical Meanderers

My name is Melinda Morang, and I'm the organizer of a small weekly walking group, the Madison Methodical Meanderers, whose goal is to walk every street within the City of Madison. We're planning a walk next Wednesday through part of the Eken Park neighborhood. I wanted to extend an invitation to anyone in the neighborhood who might be interested in joining us! It's always great when someone who knows a neighborhood first hand can share their knowledge with the group.

The walk will take place starting at 6:30pm on Wednesday, September 11, and we'll be Meet in the parking lot of the Madison East Shopping Center (where the Walgreens and Hawthorne Library are, but in the part in the middle) on E. Wash and Johnson St. (https://maps.app.goo.gl/zC6R8KPBWHcAQFcK8). The walk will be about 4 miles over about an hour and a half.

If anyone is interested in joining the group more regularly, you can join the Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/madisonmethodicalmeanderers/, or you can e-mail me at melind...@gmail.com, and I can add you to an informal e-mail list where I sent a weekly announcement about the next week's walk.

Our group aims to understand our city and cultivate friendships by exploring together. We talk while we walk and get to know each other. Conversations about urban form/planning/design, architecture, nature, and other geeky topics are especially encouraged! We walk respectfully and safely. We do not trespass on private property or walk on streets that are unsuitable for pedestrians. Children and well-behaved, leashed dogs are welcome on walks. Walks will be postponed if the weather is terrible.

If you want to see our progress so far, here's a map: https://www.arcgis.com/apps/mapviewer/index.html?webmap=a1ff2da920284171bb01f55d64635be0

We're looking forward to exploring your neighborhood next week!

From MDC
As promised, we are now moving forward with re-opening the Graaskamp Park (soft opening) this Fall*.

As Shannon Barry suggested, we maximized the greenspace by NOT replacing the parking lot, and instead plan to keep it an open greenspace.  We are adding an accessible play structure from Lee Recreation, and a cement walkway from our Apartments to the platform where we will eventually have picnic tables and planters.

*based on the City approval of our final plan (attached).

That's it for today. We'll be in touch when we have a new batch of announcements. And don't forget that Greek Fest continues tomorrow!
