RAND Summer Associate
RAND's Graduate Student Summer Associate Program introduces outstanding graduate students to RAND Corporation, an institution that conducts research on a wide range of national security problems and domestic and international social policy issues. Summer associates typically work at RAND for a 12-week period during the summer months. Associates conduct research that can be completed during the three months they are at RAND and present the results of this research to the RAND community via a 60 minute briefing at the end of their three-month tenure. Associates are closely mentored by one to two established RAND researchers and interact with other researchers outside of their primary mentorship team and area of expertise. Finally, RAND offers a number of seminars from researchers both within and outside of RAND that Associates have the opportunity to attend.
The program is designed for approximately 25 students in a wide range of academic disciplines to participate in the program each year. Proof of legal right to work in the United States is required upon hire. U.S. citizenship is not necessary except for positions that require a U.S. government security clearance. For employment in connection with certain projects where access to information is restricted by government regulations, U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status is required. Projects in national security and homeland defense research generally have these restrictions. Other projects at RAND do not contain such restrictions and the Summer Associate program is not limited to U.S. citizens or permanent resident aliens.
Associates receive a stipend during their tenure with RAND.
Qualifications
The program is designed for full time students who have completed at least two years of graduate work leading to a doctorate or professional degree (e.g., law or medical degree, professional engineer certificate). However, sometimes there are projects that match with the skills of graduate students in other stages of their education who also have significant work, research, and/or policy experience; these applicants are evaluated on a case-by-case basis for fit with the program.
A keen interest in working on applied, policy-oriented research questions is necessary. Applicants are strongly encouraged to explore RAND's website (www.rand.org) for details on RAND's ongoing research portfolio.
Who is not eligible
The program is not open to: 1) undergraduates; 2) students graduating prior to the summer of employment; 3) postdoctoral fellows; or 4) master's degree students (unless there is significant relevant work or research experience).
Application Materials
An application to our program consists of a current CV and a detailed cover letter. The cover letter should discuss in detail your research interests and how these interests fit with RAND¿s core research agenda. The letter needs also to include a list of three academic references (name/email). In addition to submitting your CV and cover letter, you will be asked a series of questions at the end of the application process. Please make sure you answer each one.
The application deadline for summer 2008 is January 6, 2008. Late applications may be accepted, depending on the applicant's discipline and background and specific research project needs.

U.S. citizenship may be required for positions requiring a government security clearance. Please indicate whether you have or have ever had a U. S. Government Secret or Top Secret clearance on the application.
