Dear NSLA Members,

We wanted to take a moment to update you on Nebraska Legislative Bill 390, which received first-round approval yesterday. While we have been following the bill closely, we are not overly concerned about what it requires.

The bill focuses on transparency and parental access to school library materials, which align with practices already in place in many of our libraries. It includes:

  • A publicly viewable library catalog, something most schools already provide as a best practice.
  • Optional parental notifications for student checkouts, which parents have always had the ability to request.

These requirements reflect what school libraries are already doing and reinforce the strong relationships we have with our school communities. While we’ll continue to follow the bill’s progress, we do not anticipate major changes to how we support students and families.

As always, we encourage you to stay informed and engaged. If you’d like to reach out to your local representatives, you can find their contact information on the NSLA website.

Thank you for all you do to support Nebraska’s students and school libraries!

Sincerely,

Jenny Razor and Joy Harvey
