NETA Wrap up
And more!
As the school year wraps up, we hope you enjoy a well-deserved summer break!
Looking ahead to next year, we’re excited to continue our NSLA work — and we’d love for you to be a part of it.
We are looking for members to join our committees. Maybe one of these is the right fit for you:
Finance Committee
Membership & Election Committee
Advocacy Committee
Professional Learning & Awards Committee
Take some time to think it over — we would love to have your voice and ideas at the table!
We’re writing to share an important update: LB390 was officially signed into law by the Governor on April 14, 2025.
This legislation allows parents to opt in to receive information about the books their child checks out from the school library. As you consider how to respond to any requests, here are a few key points to keep in mind:
There is no requirement to advertise this option. Parents must proactively request to receive this information.
You are not required to change your current practices unless a parent makes a specific request.
We do not anticipate a large number of families opting in, but it’s helpful to be prepared in the event that questions arise.
Be sure to communicate with your building administrator to ensure you are aligned on how your school will handle any parent requests.
If a parent does reach out, here are some manageable options to consider:
First, try encouraging the parent to check their child’s library account through your online catalog. This allows them to view checkouts at their convenience.
If that is not acceptable, and you do not have an automated method of notifying parents, you may take a screenshot of the student’s current checkouts and email it to the parent.
If your school does not have an online catalog, a brief email listing the books currently checked out is also a valid option.
As always, NSLA is here to support you. If you need help navigating a request or want to talk through options that work for your school, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
We’re excited to announce and welcome our newly elected NSLA board members:
President-Elect: Emily Jacobs, Lincoln Public Schools
Treasurer: Amy Soma, Omaha Public Schools
Board Member at Large: Meredith Fickes, Lincoln Public Schools
Board Member at Large: Konn in den Bosch, Bennington Public Schools
Thank you to everyone who participated in the election. We look forward to the leadership and energy our new board members will bring in the year ahead!
NSLA was proud to sponsor a fantastic speaker at today’s NETA conference! Betsy Thomas shared valuable lessons, tips for partnering with parents, and creative content ideas to help keep students engaged all year long. We’re so grateful for her expertise and the inspiration she brought to the session! Supporting and elevating school librarians is at the heart of what we do. You can view Betsy’s presentations below:
How about a fun and easy activity to do with students to learn about book awards? After talking about different book awards with students and giving examples, have students design their own award! (This is also a great activity for emergency sub plans!) Design a Book Award.pdf
