Has anyone checked this place out as a possible meeting location? It's
a bit farther east but might have a better ambience (and general
volume) than Paradise.

Almost anyplace will be an improvement to paradise bakery. I know of xtreme bean on Southern and McClintock. People use it more often to do work, less of a families eating place

Lo-Fi looks good too, a bit far from the freeway but I'm down to try it.

If I get a chance to check any of them out I'll let you guys know (haven't been to xtreme in a while but I doubt it has changed much)

One of my friends just suggested that as well

Not that it need be that way now, but the one time I tried Xtreme Bean
the volume was really high and it was very busy, so I crossed it off
my list. That obviously may have changed a ton, though, since it was
more than a year ago.

Since I'll likely be taking the light rail and a short bus ride to get
there, Baseline & McClintock is less great for me. Still, not a
downvote by any means: if it's laptop-friendly and not terribly noisy,
I'm up for most anywhere.

Steve's is no good. According to their website they close at 7 pm. Early close times was one of the issue we had when looking at coffee shops in the past. Seems like not many of them like to stay open late. If you guys want to drive up north the Kierland Starbucks, which I work out of a lot of time at night, is open until 10pm. It's one of the latest closing times around. Tatum and Thunderbird is a 10pm one too.

Being open late is good. Jo-bot coffee, near me in downtown Phoenix,
is open until midnight, frex.

I have only been to Xtreme during the daytime, Matt, so I never experienced the noise, but I could see it getting loud because of it's size/layout.
My bad, I did not see that their closing time was so early, Brad.  It's a bit of a drive (more so for a lot of other people), but I do not mind north phoenix as a location.  Hell, I don't even mind downtown - as Matt was mentioning the light rail could go to Lo-Fi in Mesa or someplace downtown.

It seems like Lo-Fi is the best for keeping the current 'center'

I also like echo coffee on 68th and Thomas in Scottsdale - if we choose to move the center of nscoders. I like the space and the coffee, and I think the people there are above avg intelligence because the ratio of macbooks to pcs there is noticeably higher than any other coffee shop I have been to. ^_-

Cartel Coffee Lab at University and Ash in Tempe is open til 10, but
they can be quite busy. Good location, though.

Matt, I have heard the same good/bad about Cartel.  Like I said I am up for trying almost anyplace new.  If none of them seem to work maybe we should just give up on coffee places park in the lot on mill/university and walk to Hayden Library ;) - or perhaps a room/area at UAT would suffice?

Well, since it sounds like we may have a few options to choose from, how about if we rotate through some different places over the next month and see how we like them? Perhaps we can start with Lo-Fi Coffee for the next meeting, then maybe Xtreme Bean the next week, and then whatever other options arise after that. Would people be up for that?

That's a good idea.
