You should seek emergency care if you have sudden, unexplained swelling in just one limb or if it occurs along with chest pain, trouble breathing, coughing up blood, fever, or skin that is red and warm to the touch. These can be symptoms of dangerous conditions like deep vein thrombosis (a blood clot in the leg), pulmonary embolism (a blood clot in the lungs), or cellulitis (a skin infection).

Examples of bacteria that lead to eye infections are tick-borne diseases like Lyme disease, leptospirosis, or canine brucellosis. Even just a cut or scrape on the eye could cause some swelling while it heals.

Dr. Eliason: Sure, and hives can be scary. Because sometimes you get one or two little spots that will show up on your skin and that's not too much of a problem. But people will come in sometimes, they can be covered in hives. And not only are they just uncomfortable because they're itching like crazy, but it's frightening. Some people will feel parts of their body swelling. Like their lips can swell. They can feel like, sometimes they get nervous. Their breathing can be affected too. Hives can become something very worrisome.

Dr. Eliason: Yeah, this is a hard question. And with the spontaneous or acute urticaria, that's the kind that just shows up. It's only around for a couple of weeks. We don't always find the causes. In children it's usually related to an infection. And so it doesn't mean you have an infection that's creating your hive. You could have an infection like a common cold. You could have strep throat.

Dr. Eliason: A lot of this isn't necessarily with the frequency but more of the severity. Hopefully I can make that make sense. When hives are developing and they aren't preventing people from doing what they normally do during the day, and they also are not causing any changes where parts of their body are swelling, then usually people can try over-the-counter products without having a worry that they need to rush in to see a physician for it.

If people are developing hives where they are getting swelling in their skin, so like I mentioned, lips can swell, ears can swell, or they can just have big welts. Their wrist gets too large. And it looks kind of doughy sometimes. Those are reasons to get into be seen by a physician sooner. Of course if people are having any difficulty breathing, it's a trip to the emergency room very quickly.

After you have done this, whether it be in the morning or in the evening, you would then just apply your pregnancy-safe moisturizer and whatever else you might need for the rest of the day/night (like a pregnancy-safe spot treatment for all that hormonal acne).

Get measured at the end of the day when your feet are the largest. When you are up during the day, your feet will swell and settle some. You want to make sure you are comfortable throughout the day and not just when you head out of the house in the morning.

Fortunately, this swelling after nonsurgical office treatments usually resolves quickly and is only noticeable to the patient. Facial filler patients often return to work very soon after treatment, even the same day in many cases.

Gentle massage of the treated area may improve the swelling in some patients. Sometimes the area just expands a little too much with edema and needs to be gingerly flattened back down. Hard pressure should be avoided. Ask your injector if massage is allowed.

Hi,
I had pdo threads in lower face also had fillers on cheeks and Botox. Had all done at same time. I have extensive swelling around the filler area and some swelling on lower jaw, I also have a small bump on one side at the bottom of my jaw. It has been 2 days. I look deformed! This is my first experience with any of this will it get better and how soon ??

Thank you for read this website. Swelling is variable after filler treatment, but a majority of swelling resolves relatively quickly. Facial filler injections have often been described as soft and natural in our patients. Patients should speak with their injector (ex. plastic surgeon, facial plastic surgeon, dermatologist, etc) if there are any concerns. A variety of options are available after facial filler injections.

Ok, so my boyfriend is constantly hitting himself in his head and face with hard heavy items as well as closed fists. Been doing it for a long time like years. He gets swelling and bruising time to time, even popped blood vessels in his own eye. Now he's got some severe swelling just above his right temple and says it feels like he's getting an ear infection and uncomfortable pulsing if leaning over along with migraine that favors the side that's swollen all the way down into his jaw by his ear. Should I be more concerned about this swelling than previous swelling he's caused himself before that would just go away over time? Or is this swelling more severe considering the location?

Thank you for your comment Ann. I am pleased to hear that after a long road of complex edema and pain, you found at least a partial solution with the help of a physician who provided the lipolymphedema diagnosis. Indeed, more research needs to be done on HCG and its potential to help individuals in your situation. I hope in the meantime with continued use of your compression garments, exercise, and manual lymphatic drainage, the residual swelling component that persists at your ankles will further improve. Wishing you all the best Ann, and thank you for your contribution on the conversation surrounding the various concurrent conditions that may be at play in individuals with a body weight challenge. I am sure this will encourage others to seek the counsel of a lymphedema therapist/lipo-lymphedema experienced practitioner who can provide other ideas for management. Sincerely, Lindsay Davey

If I had this knowledge 40 years ago, I would have fought harder to not let it progress! But who knew what we were fighting? Doctors just assumed we like to eat too much because medical schools ignored it as a disorder altogether.

Thank you for this valuable article.
As many of the others have expressed, it is such a relief to finally realize that this is an actual problem. I have spent many years trying to work this out, mistaking the swelling/puffiness/bruising for inflammation. . As I do not have much faith in Western medicine, I have tried to go more on natural interventions such as cleansing diets, enemas, fasting, meditation, chinese medicine, mild exercise, anti-fungals etc, etc to reduce my inflammation & wondering why it was not going away. Now I know it is Lipedema I feel much more able to cope with it.

For instance, when a bite swells to the size of a dime, nickel or even bigger? Or when you scratch one to the point of infection? Mosquito bites are always annoying, to be sure, but can they ever be a serious health concern?

The best way to prevent lymphadenitis is to see your healthcare provider at the first sign of any infection or if you notice a tender swelling that feels like a little lump just beneath your skin. Make sure to cleanse and use antiseptic on any scratches or breaks in your skin and always practice good hygiene.

If all of the above things are negative and the extremity is not very swollen, then the child can potentially wait to see a physician in an outpatient clinic to have an exam and get x-rays if needed. To reduce swelling, you can apply cold compresses or ice wrapped in cloth, a towel or other material, but do not apply ice directly to the skin as this could cause frostbite (freezing of the skin and underlying tissues).

It's a good idea to keep some diphenhydramine (Benadryl) at home and in your pet's first aid kits and to check with your veterinarian in advance to ensure that it's safe for you to give your dog this medication in the event of a sting. That way, should your dog ever get stung, you can just go ahead and give them their dose early and hopefully prevent some of the swelling, hives, and other problems.

After a total knee replacement, patients may experience discomfort while recovering. Pain, swelling, tenderness, and bruising are common symptoms as your body recovers and adjusts to the new joint. Fortunately, there are several options you can try for pain management after undergoing total knee replacement.

Another cause of ankle swelling is warm temperatures. The small blood vessels in the skin dilate to allow heat to escape, which helps keep body temperature from rising. But this also means more than the usual amount of fluid can leak into the surrounding tissues, especially in the legs. You can help prevent ankle swelling in warm weather by reducing your salt intake, which decreases water retention. A low-dose water pill (diuretic) also may be prescribed for people who need help to control swelling.

Sometimes, swelling accumulates above the sock. The leg can be so edematous (swollen) that once the sock is on, it will squeeze fluid out of the tissue to above the sock. When the circumference of the leg covered by the sock is reduced, the squeeze becomes less and the remaining fluid in the leg remains. To reduce swelling in this case, take the swollen leg and wrap it with mild to moderate pressure. Over time, the fluid will move out of the tissue and the wraps will loosen. Then, rewrap the leg with mild to moderate pressure. Again, fluid will move out of the tissue and the wraps will loosen. Continue the process until the swelling has resolved. Measure your thigh, knee, ankle and find a pair of compression socks to maintain the condition of the leg.

A traumatic injury such as a fracture, or any injury in the arm or hand, can often cause swelling in the hand or fingers. Not removing a ring in this situation could allow the ring to turn into a tourniquet. This can result in serious side effects including loss of sensation and blood flow and potential tendon damage, which could lead to permanent tissue damage and the need for amputation of the digit. If your finger is swollen because of an injury to the finger, it is best to have a medical professional assess your situation before attempting these techniques. Attempting to remove a ring in this situation could potentially cause more damage, should there be a displaced fracture or other injury that should not be disturbed.
