Drowsy Tory MP Rob Anders dropped from Veterans Affairs Committee
OTTAWA — Conservative MP Rob Anders has been removed from the Veterans Affairs Committee,
something veterans’ advocates have been demanding since Anders fell asleep during a committee
meeting in Halifax earlier this month.
Liberal MP Sean Casey said that Conservative MP Joe Preston — the chair of the Procedure and
House Affairs Committee — quietly tabled an updated list of committee members in the House of
Commons Wednesday.
“Mr. Anders’ name no longer appears on the list of Conservative members for the Veterans
Affairs Committee,” Casey told Postmedia News.
Anders has been replaced by rookie Tory MP Corneliu Chisu and reassigned to the House-Senate
Standing Joint Committee for the Scrutiny of Regulation.
After nodding off in a committee meeting held in Halifax some weeks ago, Anders denied falling
asleep. He later went on the offensive, describing two war veterans, who volunteer their time
to help homeless former soldiers, as “NDP hacks” and supporters of Russian leader Vladimir
Putin.
Despite the fact that Anders apologized in the House of Commons, the two veterans in question —
Jim Lowther and David MacLeod — demanded he step down from the committee.
“Bluntly, it’s still not good enough,” MacLeod said following the apology. “The crux of the
matter now rests with him resigning from the standing committee on veterans affairs.”
Joseph Burke, a director of Canadian Veterans Advocacy, said it’s “good news” that Anders has
been removed from his seat at committee.
“It’s about time the Conservative Party stepped up to the plate for veterans,” he said. “They
did the right thing, but were slow to do it.”
