discussion on Sphinx documentation

Alberto is interested to hold a virtual discussion on improving the
consistency and presentation of our Sphinx documentation, and filling in
the missing sections. This was discussed a bit in issue #1139 (not sure
why it closed two days ago).

He proposed two time slots next week (Tuesday and Wednesday at 13:30
UTC)-- if you are interested and have a preference, let me know and I'll
pick one of these slots and schedule a call.
