Hi everyone,

I'm Devansh Gupta. I've been working on adding IEEE 802.11k/v (RRM, BSS Transition Management) support to ns-3. The tracking issue is #1311, where Stefano mentioned the work could be GSoC-suitable.

The 802.11k protocol spec layer is done and I have 4 MRs up for review:

  • !2788 - NeighborReportElement (IE 52), TpcReportElement (IE 35), RmEnabledCapabilities (IE 70)
  • !2789 - Link Measurement and Neighbor Report action frame headers
  • !2790 - MeasurementRequestElement (IE 38)
  • !2791 - MeasurementReportElement (IE 39) and RadioMeasurement action frame headers

I'd like to propose Phase 2 as a GSoC project. The core deliverable would be 802.11k behavior modeling and WifiMac integration: AP maintaining a neighbor table and responding to neighbor report requests, STA sending measurement and neighbor report requests, beacon measurement request/response exchange, link measurement integration, and advertising RmEnabledCapabilities in beacons and association frames. This would be split into small self-contained MRs, along with example simulations and documentation.

As stretch goals, I'd finish the 802.11v spec layer (BSS Transition Management frames, WNM action values) and start on the 802.11v behavior side (BSS Transition Management query/request/response in WifiMac, STA steering logic).

Happy to discuss scope, approach, or mentor availability.

Thanks,
Devansh
